Keep your 5xx as they actually are! A powerPC upgrade isn't big interest... If you like PPC powerbooks, there are a lot that are native ;)
I have 4 5xx in my collection:
My best one, a 540c with a CF powermonster from artmix fed up with a 2Gb card in place of the original HD which is shot...
$1250!!! This guy is like a little boy dreaming lol. Nobody will buy such a thing for such a price :)
In addition, I'm pretty sure one day someone will design an Xceed clone as Bmow did with its floppy/hd20 emu, and since it's hidden inside the mac it won't depreciate the whole thing value...
You're lucky to own this real MacII (and not IIx)!! This is great as it is the only colour mac able to run systems prior to 6 :D
For the hard disk, you could also try to use HD SC setup from a 800k "system 6 install" disk, it might be more appropriate for such an old HD...
In addition to that beware of how many chips are on each simm, I remember that the ones with only 2 or 3 chips are not always accepted by the plus (or other early macs), prefer the ones with 8 or 9 chips which are recognized for sure ;)
Her are some pictures of my logic board,

They aren't as clear as I would but it's the best my digital camera can...
In my SE/30 this is the same led with a thinner HD connector, but that doesn't matter since (if you don't have the right thing already) you have just to buy a led and solder two wires between the led and the HD led connector and you'll be on the way ;)
Anpther thing, on the monitor you can read "Macintosh IIci"!!!!!!
Two possibilities, whether it is a fake (but the man who made it couldn't do so evident mistakes as he has to know a lot about macintosh), or maybe this ad was really made by apple but at a quite early developpement stage of the...
You can't... Unless you find a rare SCSI-Ethernet adapter but you can either use integrated local talk protocol (via printer port) and use a more up to date mac with ethernet card to make the bridge
I'll make clear pictures of my motherboard this evening when my wife comes back from work!
I touched these ICs and they never get any warm... I have a more strange issue now, I think something goes wrong in the power management since I never get anymore sign of life when hitting the keyboard...
Bad (and some good) news...
I received my hot air rework station 2 days ago, and I managed to remove the SWIM correctly! But when trying to boot, nothing changed, no chime and screen stays as pictured before :(
I also own a powerbook 100 which never wanted to read floppies (showed X instead...
Even if apple modified the rom twice, there may still be hardware limitations (scsi chip) they couldn't avoid... If not, what could explain the zip 100 can boot any mac (whatever the formatting tool used) but the plus (unless formatted with iomega driver 4.2 or less)?
PS: my mac plus runs on...
I just pulled my Plus logicboard out and measured the +5v to GND resistance: 120 Ohm!! I also measured the 12v lines but via the floppy connector since I've already put all back in place.
For the -12v: 450 kOhm but on the +12v I get only 30 Ohm!! And my Plus is running fine...
From Wikipedia: "The SCSI implementation of the Plus was engineered shortly before the initial SCSI spec was finalized and, as such, is not 100% SCSI-compliant."
To my mind, the plus is able to manage SCSI devices quite straight away, but some features had to be "invented/adapted" by apple...
Glad to hear this worked, but I'm not surprised cause I've already had this issue many years ago ;)
On my compact macs I always have 2 system folders (6.0.7 & 7.1) on my startup disks. I just isolate the system file I don't use in a subfolder and open/close the "good" system folder to...
