Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
I hesitate to suggest replacing the chip unless we can understand what exactly the self test is failing on. Do you have access to an oscilloscope? You could verify if the the two clock signals (PCLK related to register access from the CPU) and the baud rate clock are working correctly.

We've see this before, but haven't figured out what the cause is yet. According to a ROM source listing found at https://mirrors.apple2.org.za/Apple%20II%20Documentation%20Project/Computers/Apple%20II/Apple%20IIGS/Documentation/, the serial I/O chip test failure code 01 indicates a problem with...
You'll need to determine their physical size, footprint, value in ohms, if they are linear (probably) or logarithmic taper, and the power dissipation needed in watts. Reviewing the schematics would give you at least ohms and possibly the wattage. Measurement of the PCB will determine the...
The ImageWriter II that I received with my IIgs setup behaves that way at power up, it homes to the left side then moves to the center. I've not actually tried using it for printing yet, but if I have the right cables, I can give it a try Saturday. The self test for the carriage movement does...
I wonder if S11, the home position sensor switch isn't working reliably, or if there is a problem with the print head cable. It appears from the schematic that S11 is a normally open switch, but it isn't explicitly notated that way. According to the Sams Computer Facts document on the...
While I don't have a keyboard of this type to try to help out, I wanted to give you kudos for your excellent macro photos! Well lit and nicely focused.
Version 1.16 appears to be the latest. I don't know how much of a hassle it would be if you signed up for the "insider program" to access the downloads and release notes.
It is possible that a PATA HDD is starting to develop errors by this time, and that could explain the errors and corrupted file you saw. A low level reformat might correct the issue, but finding a utility to actually do the low level format might be difficult. Obviously you would have to start...
You could just wait and try seating it further when the chip and socket had warmed up a bit. Don't over do it so as not to crack the chip carrier. Or you could just use it and if it acts up later then try to seat it further.
On my 5.0a board, you physically remove the terminators. On a 5.1 or 6.0 board, you can do it via scsi2sd-util. On the 5.5 board, the web site says it is permanently enabled. http://www.codesrc.com/mediawiki/index.php/SCSI2SD#Technical_Specifications
Note there is a comment for the 5.5 board...
As to the resistors for a dummy load, you'll need to calculate the appropriate values and power ratings for the load you want to draw.
For example, if you want to draw 1 A continuous from the 5 V supply, you will need a 5 ohm resistance that can withstand 5 W. If this was a continuous service...
