Actually, I meant after getting the CD to boot and installing a viable OS on the HDD, now would be the right moment to switch master and slave over.

Now that you've booted from the CD-ROM and set up the hard drive so you can boot from it, set the hard drive as master and the CD-ROM drive as slave. Booting from slave ATA devices was weird and badly supported around that time, so it may just be a firmware limitation or bug.

It would, but the cheap availability of SATA PCI cards that can be flashed for use on a Mac would be a far better option.

Yeah I do this and it’s fine if the PCB isn’t being re-used. I also use two soldering irons sometimes.
