Rochester Electronics still makes them, I believe sort of special order, under license. They wrote an article about how they were supplying 68040FE models for medical ventilators of all things during the pandemic: https://www.rocelec.com/news/mc68040fe-microcontrollers
The Rochester ones are over a hundred dollars aren't they, possibly hundreds? The second hand prices are still cheap compared to new. We haven't quite got to that point yet
Why would you use such an outdated processor for ventilators? Like you couldn’t adapt to the 68000 or move to a modern architecture? Rochester seemingly had to jump through hoops to supply a company that should’ve moved on to something newer
