Well, in fairness, it probably wasn't your Beige's fault. Those early OS Xes were... rough.

I never really tried to use Mac OS X with that era hardware. My first experience was with my iceBook 600MHz (Dual USB & FW). It came with Mac OS X 10.1; which was only viable some of the time. When I bought Mac OS X 10.2 for it, it took over from Mac OS 9.2. (Previous Tangerine iBook/300 only ran 9.0.4, then 9.1).

Did the Voodoo3 work under OSX? I had one in my G3 266 (also upgraded to 292Mhz on a 83mhz bus) and I'm fairly certain OSX didn't even recognise it. Then again that was maybe OSX 10.0.0

I'm pretty sure 100% not. I had a 5500 that I had to switch out when I moved to X. 3dfx went under before it came out.

I recall that it worked, but only as a basic frame buffer. I switched back to the onboard Rage II+ graphics for OS X use as it at least had drivers and was marginally better.

Shame really.. the Voodoo3 made the II+ look so utterly antiquated. I remember getting the car and the first game I tried was Carmageddon II.. the difference was night and day!

Oh yeah, 3dfx definitely led the pack. Then they got lazy, and everyone passed them.

3dfx going out of business kinda made OS X drivers a bit difficult to come by. Honestly didn't see the reason to have one in a Mac. The Glide-only games library wasn't there.

My first OS X experience was 10.1 on an iMac G3, it was very slow. 10.2 improved things a *lot*. Going to a PowerBook G4 next was a huge step, so much quicker than the G3. Tech moved so fast back then.
