Ok it's sorted. It was a pin lift on one of the GAL chips on the adaptor board. Quick hit with some solder and it's working perfectly. Thanks for everyone's suggestions. All valid but in this case it was a hardware issue.

Yes, stock rom in one machine with MODE32 and the os patch and I tried with the rominator II in the other. The system runs perfectly otherwise. Passes benchmarks, Switching Carrera modes can sometimes crash it but only occasionally and I guess with what's going on inside, it's not unlikely...

It's another exercise in frustration really. Why spend 1 minute with a raspberry pi when you could have it take you a number of days and still not work quite as you expected it to with your friend, the ANS700.. It does drown the silence out though which is a feature not a fault..

Vsync line?.. I'd probe between UG6 and UF8 along with other destinations around it. Corroded via maybe? If you have an oscilloscope it might be worth looking at what's bouncing.. (or not)

Absolutely, the Quicktopix drive I have certainly wasn't cheap either.. Or media at the time for that matter. It does work perfectly with Toast and CD Masterlist so it's happily purring away but I'd love to use the original. I really ought to recap it actually. Might do that in coming weeks.
