The actual encoding here is a Sony-designed ADPCM encoding called Bit-Rate Reduction ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bit_Rate_Reduction ) designed originally for CD-XA but used on the Super Nintendo, Sony Playstation, and even the Philips CD-I to encode sample data.
