HAH thats so funny. I wish the customer wanted to keep trying to get it to work, because I really wanted to see this old G4 boot in 9 seconds.
As for me, in my own retro Mac, I have a 7300 with a PCI IDE sonnet card, and a 2.5" SATA hard drive connected to a single drive SATA to IDE adapter...
I had this same problem with my Xserve. SATA3 drives just won't work. Or SATA 2 either. SATA 3 desktop drives usually let you jumper down to SATA 2 but not 1. SATA 2 lets you jumper down to SATA 1, so i had to buy some old stock WD drives to run in htere. My next server sadly won't be a Mac but...
This Mac is running Panther, not OS 9. And the card kind of worked. After the down-flash, the card worked with a hard drive. But the SSD wouldn't work. In the end, the customer has happy with the hard drive as long as it worked. But I wonder what would happen if we bought a bunch more, different...
Today I installed a sonnet SATA PCI card in a G4 powermac. Then I installed a samsung SATA card. The sonnet card is known to be bootable so I though this had a real good chance of working.
The card was acting wonky. Turns out its a known issue where G4s need the card's firmware reverted. I did...
Reading the title of this post, it feels like someone forgot there was a G4 Mac mini too :D
Speaking of, this is really a price check post. How much do you think this old one I have might be worth?
1.25 GHz G4, 512 MB of RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, Power cable and brick included. Boots up and runs...
So a very long time ago, when I was a wee little 14 year old, I was getting my first "modern" computer. The choice ended up being between a Performa 550 or a Macintosh TV. BTW for those curious, this was up at the ComputerTown store in Salem New Hampshire.
Anyway, I was a young teen with his...
Turns out older versions of SMART Utilty itself do run on PPC and thats the vrsion i have installed on my Tiger utility volume so i guess i don't really have any problem after all.
Anyone know a SMART disk checking utility for OS X, that runs on PPC? I've been using SMART Utility for years, but it looks like that is Intel only. I have a few old PPC Macs that I want to verify have no bad blocks.
I was thinking about "modern old Macs" tonight too before I found this thread. However I was thinking an entirely different approach. Basically the ability to run system 7, os 8 and os 9 natively (aka boot up) on a late model PPC, like a G4 Mac mini. That would be perfect for me. No more huge...
Some mistaken updates but here's an accurate update:
OS 9 wouldn't run the .sea to open the app but older versions did. So I have what looks like the megafiler app on system 7.5, the oldest OS I have. But when I go to open it, it asks me to insert the original MegaFiler disk. I of course have...
MegaFiler was a database app I used on a Mac Plus back around 1992 - 1994. I have a few documents I recovered off some floppy disks but I have no way to open them. I have been able to find a copy of MegaFiler online but it crashes when you try to run it on MacOS. The oldest OS I have access to...
