What does $50 buy you these days? A Mac LC, if you know where to look!! :)

During April, I bought an SE for £30. If you're patient and avoid the obvious chancers on eBay/FB marketplace, they can be found without breaking the bank. In recent years, I've found 90s hardware abandoned in my neighbourhood - complete with software.

    Macintosh SE/30 M5119 - Restoration

Quite fortunate and it's nice that unlike the SE, Apple didn't use a soldered battery. Yeah. Those are definitely a priority. Out of curiosity, what method are you going to use to remove the SMD caps? Thanks for sharing the photos. I'm excited to see you succeed. :) Through retrobriting?

You're very welcome. :) Please update us when it arrives. I, for one would definitely love to see how you get on with this project.

    Macintosh SE/30 M5119 - Restoration

Fingers crossed for you! :) At $250 though it was worth asking the seller to at least plug it in and report what happens. Yes, I think so. My SE has a Sony PSU IIRC and the IEC socket and switch are definitely black.

    A trash can.... Mac :)

I bought one a while ago from eBay and I'm really happy with it. They're often maligned and I think that's a shame because they're solid machines, provided that you avoided the models which overheat. The availability of 6 Thunderbolt ports was a big draw for me. If you're patient enough, they...

    My first 68k Mac - Macintosh SE 2x 800k

Got it. I'll have to spend some time brushing up on System 6 (and 7) - most of my Mac experience has been with OS X/XI and occasionally 9.

    My first 68k Mac - Macintosh SE 2x 800k

Yes, that did it! 🥳 The set-up is slightly different - the files were located inside the System 6.0.8 folder - it doesn't appear to have a startup one. I sent them to the trash, emptied it, rebooted and the annoyance was at an end. Thanks for that. :)

Disappointment time - this doesn't happen. I've been unable to ascertain what exactly the Splat extension does or where to locate it. This is all that Find File turned up... Every time the SE boots up, these programs immediately start... ...and I'm unable to find a way to...

I haven't got the SE set up at the moment but I'll take a look in a few days and let you know. :)

Alright. If I make that decision we'll talk. :)

    My first 68k Mac - Macintosh SE 2x 800k

Thanks. :) It's a pretty neat machine. If I'd had one of these during the 80s I think that I would've been quite happy with it. Although the lack of a colour display would've been a downside. At some point I could investigate restoring the floppy drives to working order but that would largely...

    My first 68k Mac - Macintosh SE 2x 800k

I did some further research on this and as per the description in the SE manual, the audio out jack is "tip and sleeve" which means a mono signal is produced that only plays on one channel when used with stereo equipment. This means that the logic board isn't faulty and that I'll have to use a...

    My first 68k Mac - Macintosh SE 2x 800k

I'll do both and also test the speaker terminal on the logic board. Would that be this? Thanks. Its been fun working on the SE and seeing early versions of the Mac OS in action. :)

    My first 68k Mac - Macintosh SE 2x 800k

The speaker has never worked from the day that I bought the SE. The computer has never produced the start up sound. When I dismantled it, the speaker cable was attached to the logic board and I definitely reattached it during reassembly but it's never worked. Thanks, I'll keep this in mind for...

    My first 68k Mac - Macintosh SE 2x 800k

I've had a look through the owners guide and the audio jack is described as mono. There are some mono audio jacks that will produce dual mono sound on the left and right for stereo headphones and Hi-fi's but I suspect this is not one of them. Would I be correct in assuming this is why the...
