All the traces around the ROMS good? Have you sounded them with a meter?

Suspect ROM/s are faulty, I've had them die for no reason and produce the chequerboard. Do you have working ones from another board to test with?

Do you have any other early Macs that you can try to connect to via Appletalk? This would confirm everything hardware and software is correct. Why 8.1 on an SE/30 and not the 7.6.1 sweetspot?
