Apple IIe: what cards to choose

Hi, A little while back I purchased the amazing ESP32 card for the Apple II, and would love to finally get my Apple IIe working well around this. I don't have any working disk drives so previously used a floppy emu on it, however have a BOOTI card in it now. These are the cards that are in...

    Maxell!!!!!

It’s basically taunting you to say it can take out every single RAM slot with its acidic evil!

SE will only boot when turned on side or upside down

You can clean the heads gently using a cotton bud dipped in IPA, check also for dust bunnies inside the unit - this won't put anything out of alignment. Check also floppy cable for any damage.

    Original Apple Scanner Refurbishment Guide

Those reading here later, on restoring an Apple Scanner/OneScanner, the main large toothy gear is not easily removed on the stepper motor; it is a pressure fit and if it looks soft it will likely crumble in your fingers on removal. Other evidence would be small black chunks of plastic shearing...

SE will only boot when turned on side or upside down

Hi plat, Yep, that's an odd fault :) Have you stripped down the drive and cleaned the heads, re-lubricated the metal frame and checked if the eject gear is fully working - it sounds like it isn't engaging properly in the floppy mechanism but gravity allows the floppy to somehow get in the right...

Post of the week :) In my workplace when you see icons such as these you know it's some AI generated corporate speak that means very little :D

    Macintosh 128 Error

No, I didn't get the same code but a similar Sad Mac code referencing the likely position of the faulty DRAM module. I sourced good 4164 chips from here very recently: https://jcm-1.com/product/4164-compatible-ram/ You may need to send the board somewhere and as mentioned, recommend you...

    Macintosh 128 Error

Look at the letters and numbers silkscreened on the motherboard - and double check the Sad Mac codes. These diagnostic codes are pretty amazing really, for the time. As mentioned, there will be more faulty chips when you replace this one, or to come.

    Macintosh 128 Error

It points to a faulty chip in one of the banks (F9) going by the error code. You can "piggyback" a known good 4164 over the suspect faulty chip to test as troubleshooting measure. However there are likely more chips at fault or more to come very soon. Voltage instability - unlikely More info...

    Macintosh 128 Error

Hi, No translation needed - you likely have failed 4164 RAM, more than one chip, I would recommend desoldering all, replace with DIP16 sockets and new tested 4164 chips. Having just done this, it is not a fun job at all to do, you will need time and good soldering skills to get there. JB

Color Classic uograde to Imac G3

All CC upgrades are a hack, personally I’d go with the tried and true 5400/5500/6400/6500 upgrade noting once you go anything faster than that you will hit power and thermal issues.

I’m guessing the ease of use of removing that large gear will be the sticking point, will see.

    Original Apple Scanner Refurbishment Guide

It's super fine pitch, for those reading this later it's the large black gear down near the front LED end of the board that turns into chalk. Before moving things around, tearing it down you'd do best to lubricate the rails and don't force anything if completely stuck. Check this gear closely...

    Original Apple Scanner Refurbishment Guide

Hi, I've got 2 x Apple OneScanners I'd love to see one working - one grinds its gears but has a working green CCFL tube, while the other makes the right sounds with a dead tube. Switch the tubes however and both are working :D Is there some sort of ballast hidden inside the unit to get to...
