I used a Windows 7 era laptop on a docking station as a server for many years. It worked pretty well for that purpose and used very little electricity. I'd probably still be using it but it didn't work with a new KVM so now I'm using an old Dell micro tower instead. "Server" is probably an...
I am occasionally tempted to pick up a pre G3 PPC machine and have to remind myself that I had a bunch that really served no purpose since I have two beige G3's that do anything I desire from that era. The 6360, 6400, 9600, and 5500 would be ideal if I did that - for no particular reason other...
That's a pretty good collection for the length of time you have into it. I always wanted a 6360 - that was one I never could round up in the wild.
Cool that your recycler sells stuff. Mine usually does not- he has a LOT of vintage stuff but prying it out of his warehouse is almost impossible...
ClarisWorks 5.0.
I second the Ambrosia games. Spiderweb games as well (Exile series) but I think those are somewhat compatible.
I played a lot of Unreal Tournament, Starcraft, Halo, and some other network games back in the day. It's been so long now that I don't even remember what platform I...
IIRC there is a "focus" adjustment - been many years since I've done that but again IIRC it was the rings on the CRT yoke. I would do that as a last resort, try reflowing the solder joints first and reseat everything.
Keep in mind that these often improve or change once they have had time to...
Nice! How much RAM did you get with it?
Looks like it is an 800k model originally? Some got upgraded with a 1.44MB logic board (like mine.) Curious which you have.
More than I’d pay by a lot but I just sold a nice SE FDHD with no upgrades or extras for $200. If it spoke to you, that’s all that matters. The SE is one of my favorite machines - they are just not very upgradable and I think that hurts the value a bit for most people.
Good luck is all I can say. Mine are like that too.
One of my beige G3 towers was working great until the hard drive died. Fortunately I had a backup so I restored that onto a new drive. Now I have issues with software crashing, video card glitches, extension conflicts that disappear on...
So out of curiosity what did you pay for it?
QS's are some of my favorite Macs ever, probably my #2 favorite PowerMac. Power supplies were the main failure point. Otherwise they are pretty reliable... mine works really well, I have a 4 port SATA RAID card, a Radeon 9200, and a Giga Designs...
I like the tower version better simply because they have more options for drive expansion. There were a bunch of different drive bezels available back in the day and it was pretty cool to have a couple of CD/DVD drives, a tape drive, Zip, etc and have it look like it should be there.
The 630's VRAM is soldered onto the logic board, whereas others have a VRAM socket for upgrades (FYI in case you were not aware.)
I have no experience with the Spicy-O-Clock but my 630 was overclocked to 40MHz and my LC475 to 33MHz using the resistor moving method. Both have full '040's, both...
Those speakers were terrible from the get go and it was real common for kids to poke holes in them... common enough that you could get a guard for it. If I was in the market for a QS, I'd be happy with one that has an intact speaker for appearance only.
Rest of your plan sounds great, QS G4's...
Assuming there is no memory limitation (RAM in many cases is soooo cheap these days, no reason not to max out everything...) this was my go-to for operating systems:
68000/020/LC/LCII - System 6.0.8, 6.0.8L is my preference, 7.1 if I had a good reason
Slow 030's - Usually 7.1
Faster 030's, slow...
In my experience there is not much aside from networking that justifies the System 7 performance hit on a 68000. StickyClick and a couple other extensions make System 6 pretty nice to use.
When I had LC & LCII machines hanging around I would usually run 6.0.8L on those too. Makes them feel...
