update: I built a cable that works. I have been able to get the drives to mount when attached to my lc575 and Q950, but I'm not getting any joy when I hook this up to the Plus. Any Ideas?

I just received my q950 and am having a few problems with it. First, it wouldn't boot from the hard drive. It would show the smiley mac then go back to a grey screen then to a disk with an X flashing. It won't boot from known good boot floppy disks. It just spits them out. So I striped it...

Just to rule it out I tried another CD drive, (completely not expecting it to work since the machine would boot from the cd just wouldn't mount.) and guess what... Problem Solved

I just installed a SCSI CD drive and it mounts just fine. Still no action on the IDE bus. the new hard drive is a Quantum with the same jumper arrangement as the original Quantum, so I set them the same.

I have a beige g3 266mhz desktop. I installed a new hard drive and reinstalled os 9.2.1. it will boot from the CD drive, but if I boot from the hard drive it won't mount cd's when inserted and the drive is not listed in the system profiler. any ideas?
