OK, picked up a brand new in package Apple IIe card of ebay and a used Performa 550. Current OS is 7.5.3. plugged the card in the PDS slot. inserted the IIe card disk (ver 1.1). started the disk up and it told me the IIe card was defective?

any clues?

Have you set the machine to use 24 bit addressing? I'd assume that the Performa is set to use 32 bit addressing. Try setting it to 24 bit addressing, as IIRC the IIe card will not run on a Mac thats set to use 32 bit. You can do this in the Memory control panel.

If that doesnt' help, try dropping the OS to System 7.1.

As far as I know the Performa 550 (LC 550) is OS 7 or later and does not do 24 bit addressing of RAM (which OS 6 capable machines do).

You need a different machine for that card I think.

Are you sure? The Performa 550 is based on the LC III architecture, which is most certainly capable of doing 24 bit addressing.

I just realised - you used version 1.1, which is a very old version of the Apple IIe Card software, most certainly pre-dates both System 7.1 and the Performa 550. (and the LC III, which it is based off). You may want to try Version 2.2.1.

Yea, I am probably wrong since the LEM site says it can do 24 or 32bit addressing. I am using OS 7.6.1 on my LC 550 and I don't think it had the option of enabling 24 bit addressing that earlier OS's had.

No, 7.6.1 has absolutely no support for 24 bit mode (hence why you can't run it on any 68000 system, or a SE/30, II, or any other 32 bit "dirty" system). However, if you drop that 550 to any version between 7.1 and 7.5.5, and you should have it - my LC III is running System 7.1, and I can confirm it has it.
