Is it possible to add a USB/Firewire Combo PCI card on Mac 9500 (Power Tower Pro with NewerTech G3)?

Bear with me, it's been more than ten years since I brought my Mac out of the closet so I forgot everything about the OS9 system management.

The three USB and two Firewire combo card I just got off the eBay has no brand on it.

But the chips the card uses are ALi 5271 A1, 0542 TS05 for the USB and Agere FW8028 for the firewire.

The seller claimed that he used the card on a Blue G3.

I did install the PCI card and it powered up the USB HD but it refused to recognize it.

The card didn't come with any software so I wasn't able to install any driver for it hoping that the OS9 would recognize it automatically.

Is there a solution?

Thanks

OS 9 comes with generic USB and firefire extensions - I'd suggest reinstalling OS 9.x with the card installed, and checking the USB/FW components. Should work OK then.

No, you should be able to do an archive and install; it's an option in the installer program. It will leave everything on your disk as-is except for the System folder, which is renamed and moved aside for the new System folder. Course, you have to make sure you have enough room, and doing a disk repair and defrag on your drive before starting is a good idea.
