Laserjet 4 Plus with Duplexer

I picked up one of these today, for parts basically, because the LaserWriter Pro, Pro 630, and 16/600 are all based on the same Canon engine, and because I have a Pro 630 that I have used for the past 10 years. I also hope soon to lay my hands on the much faster 16/600, with a few spare 98x cartridges. Either is an extremely reliable and cheap to run printer, but they are getting on in years, so parts machines are good to have. So out I went and got me an HP, which has identical mechanicals.

The main point of interest for me about the Laserjet, however, turned out to be that it came with a duplexer. Now, though there was never a duplexer option for the LaserWriters mentioned, there is a slot in the printers' PPD for it. I noticed this a couple of months ago when (manually) adding Appletalk-only printer PPDs to a X.8 MacBook Pro (I print to them through an IP print server, which works perfectly). The PPD controls what the computer looks for in the machine mechanically (essentially the possible configurations, like Envelope Feeder, yes or no), and is a simple text file that can be easily edited. So if I can get the duplexer to fit physically (which will be a bit of a fiddle, but the similar 500 sheet paper trays from these machines certainly do fit), I want to see if I can get an old LaserWriter to print double-sided for me. If it doesn't work, then I still have the Laserjet. For speed, it lies somewhere between the Pro 630 and the 16/600, at 12 pages per minute, which is not too bad.

The use of the Laserjet is not what I had planned when going out to get it today, but the surprise is that this printer, which has an expensive (and for 1994, high-end) optional duplexer attached, is pretty much pristine, and reports that it has printed a grand total of -- wait for it -- 30 pages. They are rated for a minimum of 500,000. I don't know if it is possible to reset the page count, but as the owner did not know that it was possible even to get a page count out of the machine, I doubt that he did any resetting himself. The machine looks so clean internally that a 30pp. count is almost conceivable.

Bought it for $20. Alas, it did not come with a Postscript SIMM, which means that it is no good with a Mac -- yet. But that can be changed.

Anyone happen to have a Laserjet 4 Plus Postscript SIMM to sell/ trade? I know, it's a lot to ask someone to remember from a box of parts, but you never know....

I do believe that PostScript emulation cartridges will work as well. It isn't like the SIMM is expensive either. If I had a spare I'd offer it but I only have font cartridges.

On the other hand, if you do decide to part ways with it I'll be intersted in the duplexer. ;D

Ooo, neat. We still have 2 or 3 LaserJet 4s at my work. Those things are just absolute workhorses. One of them has been printing reports for the office for the past 12 years without so much as a hiccup. Never, ever seen one with the duplex, though. I just Google Imaged it and that looks pretty cool. Will it fit a LaserWriter?

The LW Pro 630 fits on top but the rear door does not close. However, if the external plastics are removed, the internal mechanism does appear to be a fit. I have not gotten farther than that yet, and am not sure what I'll do about it.

I am into the whole vintage thing, but not the ghetto look, so I may just forego adapting a LaserWriter and use the HP printer as is once I find a Postscript SIMM (C3129) for it. They are such common printers that I ought be be able to dig one up locally if I give it time. Thanks for the lead on the cartridge. I will take a peek for those as well.

Buy the PS upgrade for the HP printer and make life easy. From distant recollection, the duplexer does not run well in a heavy volume environment but it is great for SOHO work. If the printer or duplexer has been resting for a while, the rollers may be flattened so paper handling may be poor. Rollers are replaceable or can be rejuvenated (eg offset printing blanket restorer).

"Rubber Renue" (yes, afraid so) is what I tend to use on old rollers and such. I am not certain what's in it but it works wonders on old printers.

I purchased some of those LJ 4M+ back when I did IT purchasing for the agency I worked at. They're great. After one adds the duplexor they are still modular enough to take a 500 sheet paper tray. I'm not sure how high you can stack the thing up, but you can add the duplex unit under the printer and then at least one, but perhaps several (4?) 500 sheet trays under that.

The Postscript SIMM should be available on Ebay at a "make it worth my while to put it in a box" price, I think. The other SIMM slots will accept most 72 pin RAM, although there are some PID pins which could conceivably cause issues. HP always claimed that only their RAM worked in HP printers, but in this era, when their RAM was standard 72 pin SIMMs, the only RAM I ever had trouble with was authentic HP RAM. All the 3rd party stuff I tried worked fine, but their expensive RAM wasn't recognized in the PaintJet XL300 (not sure I remembered that model right).

Let's see, for fun, this is also the printer recommended for use in the Toner Transfer Method of printed circuit board etching:
