Connecting my SE/30

Heys theres,

Is there a way to get my SE/30 online with my Ethermac PDS RJ45 card, a cross-over cable (regular CAT 5e also available), and sharing the connection to the internet via my iBook in either 9.2.2 or 10.4, or my Mac mini Intel Duo?

There isn't really a definitive guide around -- there are hints and clues, but no step by step guide.

As of right now, my SE/30 has a 40MB HDD, and the installer for 7.5.3 requires more space than I can handle, so I think it would be very convenient to network for file sharing in System 6. I tried enabling file sharing, checked to make sure the disk was shared (9.2.2), AppleTalk on. On the SE/30 it has AppleShare 2.0.2, the Ethermac driver (or seems like it) -- what is next?

Also, how do I fetch Desk Accessories like KeyFinder, WordFinder and so forth out of the menu? I checked FastFind and found nothing to where they were located, and played with Font/DA Mover and still nothing.

I'll be pushing a dual boot with 6.0.8 and 7.5.5.

I'm installing 6.0.8 right now, I'll be trying to figure out how to copy over the System files and other important files from the System 7.5.3 CD Install.

The installer requires 41MB of space by itself, and I have a 40MB HDD.

SE/30 + 6.0.8 + _________________________________ + Ethermac + Standard CAT 5e or Crossover = connection to iBook.

What do I need? MacTCP, ___________________________?

EDIT: Back. Ethermac drivers installed, Network panel shows up under the Control Panel, AppleShare Workstation ZM-3.5 installed (3.6 shows up in Chooser), my iBook running 9.2.2 has file sharing turned on, 2ndry drive shared, Guests can connect to this computer, I tried both a cross over and a regular CAT 5e cable, and nothing shows up.

NSI-ZM 1.4.4 and 1.4.5 are not working. Both .sea files give me a -27 error code in 9.2.2, and don't work in 6.0.8. I'd love to upgrade to 7.5.5 so I can use MODE32, (well, actually, 32-bit addressing can be enabled under System 6, but I'd rather use 7.5.5) and get this thing online and playing Bolo.

To answer your desk accessory question--in System 7.0 and higher versions of pre-OS X operating systems, desk accessories can be found in the "Apple Menu Items" folder, located within the system folder. Only in System 6.0.x and earlier are they stored within the system file.

Right on, is there a way to fetch them out of the System file? I kinda want KeyFinder and the others: this computer apparently came from a high school (secondary school). (Actually HDD, that is)

I don't have a SE /30 but a SE. I would advice you to try System 7.0.1 or System 7.0

I never got the Ethernet cards working with System 6. But they do work in System 7.

Install one of these and install the drivers for the card.

A cross cable could work, but I'm not sure. Old Ethernet cards are very picky. You should have a real 10 Mbit only hub. That allways works. Old network cards do not have 10/100 auto sensing.

Cool, I'm very confident that at least one active member here has the same exact setup as I do.

I'm searching hard for "ethermac" just to see help, any help anywhere.

At least when I'm done, I'll have a set-by-step list for the next guy, for at least how I did it. I want to share the connection through either my Mac mini 1.66GHz or iBook G3 900/32VRAM, since I can only get Wifi here.

Hi,

I am about to try the same thing. I have a Mac SE with an ethernet card and am trying to hook up to my cable modem. No dice yet.

You might have a harder problem because you're pretty much stuck with System 6 on an SE. Yes it can run 7.5 but you will feel the drag.

Okay. For some reason 7.5.3 wouldn't like to install the first time I put it on, a manual install resulted in the inability to unpack Finder with Tomeviewer, and a manual copy of 7.5.5 System/Finder wouldn't work either.

But then, mysteriously, it cooperated. I am running 7.5.5 right now.

Here's what I got, in review:

SE/30, 32MB memory, 40MB HDD, Ethermac RJ45 PDS card. And a cool ergonomic split keyboard with a built in trackpad. System 7.5.5.

Critical version info: Chooser version 7.6.1, AppleShare version 3.7.4 plucked from OS 8.1 using TomeViewer, EtherTalk Phase 2 version 2.5.7, tried to install Workstation 3.5 but wouldn't work, all of Open Transport 1.3 except "Open Tpt AppleTalk Library (426k)" causes the system to bomb before any control panels can load (Divide by zero).

AppleTalk won't start, but acknowledges Ethernet as one of the ports available, but it won't let me save the configuration (Printer and Modem port also fail to let it work properly). A crossover cable is connected, my iBook G3 900/32VRAM booted into 9.2.2 fails to recognize the other computer (kinda duh...). Farallon EN Diagnostics recognizes the 030 PDS network card. All tests are indicated OK.

Someone else is out there who can solve these issues.

I'm beginning to think the AppleTalk stuff may not be neccessary, since Internet sharing with a host Mac is done over PPP I believe, and AFP can be used for file transfer.

The question is now how do we set it up. Must be an industrial or governmental trade secret. Actually all the drivers that come with my Ethermac card are outdated with 7.5.5 stuff.

I suppose I'll wait till the cows come home, eat a good dinner, have a little chat about SE/30 connecting, and go out again?

As will I.

Tempting, teasing photos on the Flickr page are not encouraging -- they make it look easy.

But yes, I will make a step-by-step guide to doing what I did.

Okay, this is how I connected to the internet:

1. Acquire Ethernet card. On my Ethermac 030 PDS card, the drivers are more for 7.1 or similar. (System 6 is also listed in the 800KB installation disk)

2. Install 7.5.3, and upgrade to 7.5.5. All the drivers for my card are already installed with 7.5.5, and are higher versions than the install disk anyway.

3. Use a straight regular Ethernet cable to connect the RJ45 connector on the card to the port on the router.

4. Start Network Software Selector, and select Open Transport Networking. Reboot.

5. Open TCP/IP. (Network is hidden by the OS, but if you enable Classic Networking it'll come back) Set to "Connect via Ethernet", and configure to "Using DHCP Server", unless you want to configure this area yourself. I have AppleTalk set on Ethernet, but I'm sure that won't matter here, since AppleTalk and TCP/IP are different protocols.

6. Start your internet browser (I have iCab, I set it to 5120KB memory and put it on a RAM Disk) and type away. Google page takes about a minute to load, a 1MB file takes about 30 seconds to download.

7. If you want to use another Mac to share a connection with, the methods have to different. Input=X, Output=Y. In other words, you cannot have Input=AirPort, Output=Airport. I'm using AirPort input to Ethernet output.

8. I then use a cross-over cable to connect the two computers. Start System Preferences, then Sharing. Turn on Personal File Sharing and Personal Web Sharing under the Services tab. Go under the Internet tab, and configure it as in step 7.

9. You're sharing your connection and online.

My next very important thing to do is to connect to my OS X 10.4.11 Mac mini so I can file share and share the internet connection at the same time. Although we have a 1.5MB/sec DL and 130KB/sec upload, the max download I observed was 66KB/sec. I don't have the luxury of a wired connection here, so I'll use the share the Wifi connection through to the Ethernet port on my Mac mini to the SE/30.

I will update this post/thread later, with pictures.

Right now I'm exploring the proper FTP clients. AFP to OS X requires OpenTransport 1.x.x, which I can't install because I have 5mb HDD space left. Once I get a bigger HDD I'll explore the AFP route. FTP could also work great with Windows.

I just tried Transmit 1.6 but it bombs. I'm installing Internet Configt 1.3 shortly and if it still bombs I'll try another.

Installed OpenTransport 1.1.2, AppleShare Client 3.7.4 and have Chooser v.7.6.1.

Cannot connect via AFP or Server IP address.
