Continuing the saga of my WGS 8150/110, I was curious if the 600i was working or not. This drive has an unfortunate number of delicate ribbon cables, which makes disassembly and repair a bit of a gamble. Regardless, my first task was to trace down a mechanical, not electrical, problem: the tray wasn't ejecting. Various whirs emerged when the drive was powered up and the eject button was pressed, but nothing more. Frustratingly, most of the mechanical portions are blocked by the drive tray itself, which you in no way should try to force (either by prying up vertically or sliding it towards you.)
Instead, there's actually a secondary eject system which you can reach with a screwdriver or other thin rod: the round hole to left of the eject button. Barring total grease lock-up, it's a fail-safe way to eject the tray: it physically manipulates the eject gears, accepting the screwdriver over an inch into the drive body as you go.
This, together with some gentle easing past the bump stops at the end of its travel, will get the tray out of the way. Hiding underneath is our problem: the belt which transfers force from the eject motor to the gears:
Needless to say this belt has frozen in place and will not work reliably anymore. Now we have the conundrum: who sells a replacement belt for this device? I can't find anything online for the CDU* series of CD-ROMs, but am hoping that Sony re-used the basic mechanism in their tray-based audio CD players. It's a square belt, and the diameter (when forced back into a circle) seems to be about 3cm.
Curious if anyone's replaced one of these belts before?
