So this request is for a Mac friend who posted the question in System7Today sometime in early 2021 and I meant to post about it here; talk about a better late than never moment!! 🤦♂️
Anyway, as the linked old thread shows, a very bright soul managed to get a working version of Mac OS 7.6...
If a fast vnc client is updated and/or optimized for 68k and ppc macs, newer systems or even virtual machines can be used to surf, email and do other things remotely on our macs while we do what we love on them, like play games, office and productivity suites or even retro-programming. It's all...
FYI, this link now lives here: https://68kmla.org/forums/index.php?/topic/52677-macipgw-virtual-machine-for-tcpip-on-your-old-mac - thanks to sfiera for finding it!
I love Pfinder, Galgot! :D
I just fired it up on Mac OS 9 and it work really great! It would have been nice if the author had also made a 68k version (w/out large 32-bit Mac OS X icons); remember this list is for 68k, lol! not to worry, I love and use OS 9, so your gems won't go to waste and...
I added one more to the list, and I found my 68k DoubleTouch control panel again.. that one was a hard-to-find one, lol!:
3.5.1 Switch-It - very customizable app switching utility
1.0.0 LiteSwitch - another easy-to-use app switching utility
I went with Switch-It for it's flexibility although...
This thread references a 1994 published book and CD. It looks like one of our forum members has/d access to the CD a few years ago and another has a vast collection of software from the 90s:

Great work Defor! ;D
One possibility might be to contact a mac user group near their HQ who may have those CDs archived or a fellow member who collected them. Mac outfits like these tend to show up at user group meetings to make presentations of their stuff and often give away or discount...
Yes! I remembered the first hack, looked for it and stumbled upon it's origin. Definitely worth digging up. It would have been great if they still had these available online, but the good thing it's that they can be archived on old Mac software sites :)
The contents of a newer one is found here. It's mostly for OS X but also has some hacks for OS 9. I doubt any of them run on 68k systems, but you never know. ;)
Those are some very fun GUI enhancements. I love Window Monkey, I may have forgotten about Gravite, and Zipple's one I paired up with Menuette! [:D] ]'>
This is where the extension manager comes in really handy! This way the fun is just a reboot away ;D and when having a more relaxed...
Here is a neat request for something really unique in the Mac Classic world:
has anyone heard of MacHacks?
They held contests every year for the best Mac system hacks and they published these onto CDs. A really cool one was the CD from 1999, since it collected all of the hacks from all the...
Thanks Galgot! Yes the Tilery is indeed an elegant and very customizable launcher! I only went with DragStrip because it can mimic a true dock look and feel just a little better and it can hold folders, files and control panels as well as programs.. I even managed to add the trash icon for looks...
Those are awesome items guys!
@galgot: I'd love to run a-dock, but that will be for my mac os 8.5+ powermacs only :)
@johnny: finderpop and greg's buttons, I'll have to try those two out!
By the way, has anyone heard of MacHacks? they had contests every year and they published these hacks...
I've been searching for some of the best theming resources and add-ons for Mac OS 8.1 running on 68k-based Macs. So far I've installed these:
2.3.1 - kaleidoscope - os theming
2.3.1 - smoothtype - font anti-aliasing
2.7.0 - greg's browser - finder window with columns view
2.4.5 - power...
A bit late here, but if the icons on this system were pasted on, instead of changed by the kaleidoscope control panel and extension (although it was actually an application), then to revert them to the original system icons you would need to cut them; copying them still would leave the pasted...
I've been enjoying some Mac hacking inside my Chromebook :)
So far, I've managed to add some nice desktop pictures, change system and app icons and skin my windows, as well as change the system font, add some window fades, transparency and smooth the system font.
What's left on my to-do list...
