Can someone post a pic of a Mac II drive sled?

It was my misunderstanding originally. I assumed that something else was needed, similar to the sleds that I have used for 3.5in drives with later Macs, and told reallyrandy that I was missing this piece. Note that Randy asked about a drive sled. This quickly (d)evolved into a discussion of hard...

oldappleguy, reallyrandy already has this bracket. See the photos in

Can someone post a pic of a Mac II drive sled?

reallyrandy already has the hard drive carrier (which is part 805-0952, and looks to be different from 922-0066). What is needed is whatever came with the 5.25 inch original drive ... Looking at http://tim.id.au/laptops/apple/legacy/macintosh_ii.iix.iifx.pdf, which is where the exploded view...

first step in finding new homes for a Plus, SE, SE/30

FYI - these macs found a new home. Went to a fellow 68kmla'er, who can self-identify if they want to. Never made it to Trading Post because my friends were overwhelmed trying to move their parents out of a large house with lots of stuff into an apartment, and were unprepared/unwilling to...

first step in finding new homes for a Plus, SE, SE/30

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I've never opened up any of these systems (I'd never touched any of these until last week) - I'll search for instructions, but are there any gotchas when opening them up that I should be aware of?

first step in finding new homes for a Plus, SE, SE/30

No indication that they are interesting in doing ebay - I'll be helping with Trading Post or local only - and also 'as is'. Maximizing return is not their goal. Guess I'll look back through old Trading Post listings to get a feel for typical pricing, and try to adust accordingly for the...

first step in finding new homes for a Plus, SE, SE/30

Some friends want to get rid of 3 compact Macs of their parents that were last touched in 2001. They would like these to go to people who want to keep them going, and I volunteered to act as the intermediary here. I know nothing about Compact Macs, and need some advice on what information/leg...

Mac II that doesn't like to start up

Macdrone, thanks for the comments. I already found the jump start instructions, and Elfen also included the instructions in his last post. Batteries were replaced 3 years ago, so "should" be okay. If it becomes difficult to start again, this will be the first thing that I check. (Not excited...

Mac II that doesn't like to start up

Thanks for the many thoughts. Since the problem has disappeared (for the moment) since I swapped hard drives, I'm leaning toward the power supply being the culprit (or perhaps the original hard drive is failing, though that seems like a strange behavior for a failing hard drive). To answer your...

Mac II that doesn't like to start up

techknight - does this change your diagnosis of a possible problem with capacitors associated with the soft power circuit? What are the failure modes of tantalum capacitors - anything visible? Thanks.

Mac II that doesn't like to start up

    > Not the whole board but the 3 or so caps on the start up circuit, which will be in those little silver cans even if the rest of the board is solid state Tantalum caps. Where are these again? This is a Rev. A Mac II board. I've looked and don't see anything.

Mac II that doesn't like to start up

FWIW - Changing SCSI drives seems to have solved my start-up problems. Perhaps the one drive was trying to draw more power at startup than the PS was consistent at providing?

Mac II that doesn't like to start up

Thanks for all of the comments. Just to reiterate - it is not failing to start (yet), and the issue has not been getting worse over the last few years. I'll try the jump start test first, just to check that the replacement batteries have not started to fail prematurely.

Mac II that doesn't like to start up

I have a Mac II that requires some coaxing to start up after it hasn't been used for a few days (or weeks). Once started, and then shut down, it starts up immediately when tried again. The initial start up issue can take 1 - 30 minutes before resolving itself  (not especially accurate as I am...

What's the point of being 32-bit clean?

    > Pretty sure it just replaces some dirty routines in the Mac's native ROM with ram resident replacements Thanks. That makes sense. To answer the original question "why it matters?", the following may be useful: (https://support.apple.com/kb/TA47454?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US). It...

What's the point of being 32-bit clean?

I've never seen any discussion of this, but I assume that using MODE32 to access more than 8M of memory introduces a performance penalty. Capturing and remapping addresses in software sounds like a drag on performance to me. Have to think about whether there is an easy way to evaluate this on my...

Which is the best NuBus cards for II?

    > buy at least 8MB of RAM. You don't need any more than 32MB and 8x4MB is not difficult to find. Going higher than 8MB requires some magic if you have an unupgraded Mac II. As mentioned earlier > 688851 MMU or an Apple Custom MMU chip you will need the 688851 to use larger than 1MB...

    Macintosh IIx RAM configuration issues

Also, check out http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/mac2config.txt- no 2MB SIMM option listed there either. (Says that you can get 16MB PAL SIMMs to work with just the PMMU and MODE 32 ... think I'll stop with what I've got.)

    Macintosh IIx RAM configuration issues

I bought 4 4MB SIMMs on e-bay that worked in my Mac II (yay me), so I am up to 20MB now. This was a pull from a Mac II, and I do not know if the seller has access to any more. You might ask him though: http://stores.ebay.com/macmemoriesstore/ Note that he seems knowledgeable and, at least...

    Fun at the local auction

You've got a lot to do :) , but if you get the chance please report on the amount and type of memory in the Mac IIs. Both LazarusNine and I would be interested in knowing.
