Over the last few weeks I restored my Apple Extended Keyboard II and purchased and restored an AppleColor High Resolution RGB display. I also swapped the fan in my PSU to reduce noise, My Macintosh II Is working very well now, and I’m so happy.
Here is what my temporary fan mod looks like. It’s not great; as I’m running the PSU without its cover (not safe). But it’s running smoothly for now. Note the orientation (air flow arrows on top of the fan). It is blowing air from inside the case through the power supply and then out the side...
I also have a Rev A Mac II. The fan is quite loud on those and runs continuous (not variable). It cools the entire system, so is important. I recently removed and opened my power supply. The fan is connected to a pretty standard 2 pin header. I connected a larger 12v fan and zip tied it outside...
I really appreciate all the details! It also motivates me to get working on my Mac II restoration. My 800K floppy drive has been sitting on my bench for weeks waiting to be refurbished; so everything you are doing is very interesting to me.
Keep up the great work!
Great work! Thanks for the detailed writeup, it was a pleasure to read.
I would like to remove the internal metal shields from my Macintosh II to do some thorough cleaning. From those with more experience; is the standard way of doing this to use a large drill to gently “drill out” the plastic...
Thanks for all the research mg.man! The thread title really is accurate; it's a bit confusing for sure.
I'm just happy I can pull off the 8MB without finding parts that are pretty hard to come by. 8MB is likely fine for my needs. Hopefully this thread helps others in a similar situation.
Today was a big day for my Macintosh II:
- Installed 8MB RAM from MemoryMasters
- Connected a PiSCSI using an old Raspberry Pi 2 board as a SCSI drive
- Moved it from the workshop into the house proper
I know the sticker might be upsetting to some; but my Mac once had a large number written...
I just installed 4 1MB SIMMs in Bank A and another 4 1MB SIMMs in Bank B and it seems to be running fine at 8MB. My machine is a revision A Macintosh II board with no ROM, SWIM, or PMMU upgrades.
Are you sure both banks can’t be the same size if only using 1MB SIMMs? Will my setup have...
I saw your post and decided to record removal of my 36 year old 3V batteries from my original (board A) Macintosh II. Both are 3V batteries. One registered 3V and the other 3.8. Amazing after 36 years! Video in my thread:
Post in thread 'I am finally a Macintosh II owner again'...
Today I cut the 36 year old Varta batteries off the board and temporarily replaced them with AA battery packs. Initially I clipped the AA packs on but decided it was too janky and soldered them with shrink wrap. My Macintosh II is booting 6.0.8 and 7.5.5 with new batteries!
The amazing thing is...
Thanks! I love this idea! I’m not sure I want to spend a lot on aftermarket upgrades for this machine, as I’m trying to keep it like my original. But building something myself could be a lot of fun, and possibly inexpensive. I’ll do some digging to try to find the article. And if I can find some...
Thanks! It’s not a museum piece, but it’s perfect in my eyes :-)
This AA battery idea intrigues me because I think I can find all the parts here at home. AA battery holders are common and I think I have some clip wire connectors. It might be a good idea as a temporary solution until I make an...
Great info, thanks! I'll get working on the battery components right away. Probably using https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/mpd-memory-protection-devices/6S-1-2AA/2077833
Ah, so I have a Rev A without PMMU. That's fine. When I dig out my keyboard and mouse I'll keep an eye out for...
Thank you so much @ObeyDaleks! Your machine looks wonderful.
I do think mine is a Rev A, which is likely what my first Macintosh II was as well since I purchased it right when it came out. I'm thrilled to learn this, and also that I can avoid re-cap. I think I will do the same battery mod you...
All my first jobs went toward saving up enough to buy a Macintosh II in my Junior year of high school in 1987. It was my prize possession and jump started my tech career. But I had to sell it around 1990. Today I received a working Macintosh II that is in much better condition than I expected...
