You definitely get better with experience so likely you are better at this than you give yourself credit for. First time for these can be daunting.

Thank you for that suggestion. I have used that method for cracks and standoffs, and the hardened material is very very strong as you know. For holes like this, I would have needed to repaint the case . I was able to get a bottom case off eBay which I have not used, as the screen could not be...

Powerbook 145b repair attempt needs help

Not sure. New thread with title 'How to repair Powerbook interconnect cable' would be easier to find for those wanting to repair this cable. I bought replacement cables so I am good until I fiddle with them again LOL

That would be a huge contribution if you can make this happen, and it is something that can be done on our benches. Many of us have been plagued by this cable. Please take lots of images that you can share here. :)

Honestly not sure. I think aligning the connectors would be challenging.

Powerbook 145b repair attempt needs help

There was a discussion thread on here that mentioned a source for the 50 wire ribbon cable, but not sure how you would place the connectors. That would require precision to pierce each wire. The cable do come up on eBay although they are usually pricey.

Powerbook 145b repair attempt needs help

Exactly my experience. I learned that the hard way by buying replacement keyboard that also had key issues. I should have clued in when it was the 'same' keys at least the first attempt to repair. Later as I further stressed the cable, it became more keys. All good with new cable. Good luck.

    The certainly add ventilation LOL

    Powerbook 145b carnage

I think thermoplastic melted into the holes might work but will search around. My primary goal is actually to get my other PB145b without the ventilation holes working.

Thinking about that. What do you think would fill them? Would thermoplastic stick to the PB case material?

    Yes agree. Thanks

    Powerbook 145b carnage

I guess title was a bit dramatic LOL, but I was shocked that someone would do this to a vintage computer. I have a dead screen that could not be revived with re-cap, so I suspect that corrosion destroyed a trace somewhere. Or the ribbon cable connector is damaged. I was hoping to at least get a...

    Powerbook 145b carnage

Yes I have all the parts except the one I still need. A screen. Alternative would be to run over it with my car and re-list on eBay as having 'minor damage, possibly from a heavy weight'.

    Powerbook 145b carnage

I thought I would share this as I have never seen anything quite like this. I bought this Powerbook 145b on eBay and it was described as having damage 'possibly from a drill' . I do not think you need to be much of a detective on this one LOL. It arrived very poorly packed with only a few pieces...

Powerbook 145b repair attempt needs help

Thanks for the comments. Fred1212 has posted a latch from Australia which was very kind of him, but it has not yet arrived. It is a long way from where I live in Canada. I would be enjoying it more, but funny thing happened... my work area is in the basement and my kids recently bought me a...

Powerbook 145b repair attempt needs help

On the grazed knuckles. I have learned to open the case just enough to use a plastic spudger to separate the connector from the board, and on reverse to 'hover' the top case to align the cable into the board connector and then press down carefully with the spudger. Then easy to put the two cases...

Powerbook 145b repair attempt needs help

Crazy indeed that it is only the ribbon cable that fails, as the other 4 connections (inverter, keyboard x2, and LCD screen) are robust. Seems they used brittle small gauge wire that could not handle much flexing so they break somewhere. Has anyone ever tried to trace and bodge wire across a...

Powerbook 145b repair attempt needs help

Good you diagnosed a second fault and did not assume the replacement interconnect board was faulty as well. I got into that trap and replaced a good keyboard. Now I have parts for the next one LOL

    It's MO time ☺

I pulled the Fujitsu MO box out and looked at the disk that was in the box. This was a slide in drive (looked like a ZIP drive) that went into the expansion bay of PB3400 and PB5300. It was not attached by a SCSI cable. The disks were 230MB MO. Again, many years since I had this open and...
