History of the PowerPC 603 and 603e

I just want to chime in on the 6200 performance issue. I had a 6205 as my first PPC Mac. Connectix Speed Doubler worked well enough to correct a lot of the issues with 68k emulation. The bigger issue was the problems with the serial ports and the Comm Slot. The serial ports were limited to...

Power Computing PowerBase & PowerCenter Boot issues

I had a PowerBase 180 back in the day and the PCI riser is early unseated.

What Mac OS Version is best for PPC Macs that are bad at 68k emulation?

I don't find that to actually be true. Mac OS 8 was still using the same old System 7 kernel until 8.6. It's all the extra stuff added on top as extensions and control panels that use the resources. A lot of those are moot now, like Software Update, external media drivers, Multiple Users...

What Mac OS Version is best for PPC Macs that are bad at 68k emulation?

The 68k emulator for PowerPC was rushed because Apple had earlier planned to use Motorola's RISC processor. I believe initially the 601 was going to be able to run 68k code through a hardware emulator. Apple's 68k emulator was rewritten for the PCI Mac ROMs. It was rewritten again for the...

Good OSes for your 68k Mac

The buses on the 603 and 601/604 were different. The G3 was designed "bus agnostic" which is why so many upgrades were made.

"Power Macintosh Card" and "601 Processor Upgrade" - What is the difference?

Boom. https://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/documents/cases/1997/08/c3763cmp.htm This is just one of several. No need to insinuate I’m a liar just because you don’t have the knowledge I do. That’s not being a good forum member.

"Power Macintosh Card" and "601 Processor Upgrade" - What is the difference?

Apple sold several 68k Macs with the promised ability to upgrade to PowerPC when their cards became available in an effort to both avoid the Osborne effect and to encourage people to buy higher-margin 68k machines. Their upgrade cards never materialised. To avoid another lawsuit as Apple was...

Looking to buy a G3 AirPort card

It's easier to buy an old AirPort Base Station and add it to the network. That's what I've done in the past. 802.11 B/G/N is so slow that I've stuck with just using Ethernet solutions.

Technical explanation of why the LC, LC II, and Classic II have a 10MB RAM limit

AV Quadra ROMs were 2MB, according to Apple. https://support.apple.com/kb/SP237?locale=en_US

Technical explanation of why the LC, LC II, and Classic II have a 10MB RAM limit

That’s a false equivalency. Inflation doesn’t scale evenly across all goods, and electronics have actually continually become less expensive. Example the Performa 600CD which came out 2 years later was only $2000 at launch. However anyone spending Macintosh money in the 80’s and 90’s was not...

Looking to buy a G3 AirPort card

I believe the first and last pins are swapped. There used to be an adapter for it.

Technical explanation of why the LC, LC II, and Classic II have a 10MB RAM limit

I don’t understand why Apple didn’t just go with the IIsi and not release the LC. The LC was only $400 cheaper than the IIsi, and it was obvious from their push at the time they viewed the IIsi as the inexpensive computer for home users.

MP3 Player with Apple MPEG Media System

MP3 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer III MP3 is also MPEG-2 Audio Layer III, but it has additional bitrates, but they’re lower, so not needed for music. Anything that can decode MPEG-2 can decode MP3 audio, and almost all MP3 audio can be decoded with MPEG-1. MP3 decoding isn’t really computationally...

    DuoDock SCSI

The most popular device for SCSI PowerBooks was an L-shaped adapter to turn that HDI-30 into DB-25. I agree that it is annoying and didn’t make sense that Apple had the HDI-30 in the Duo Dock, or any Dock for that matter.

    68K PowerBook conversion

If you don’t want to see people leave, then you should support them when someone like GRudolf94 makes a poor attempt to bully them. I dont see that there was anything wrong with how you responded. And the fact that several users chided you for defending how you enjoy your hobby and use your...

    68K PowerBook conversion

It’s wild that if someone defends themselves on this website, THEY’RE the bad guy. It was very, very obvious that GRudolf94 was the problem here. How dare avadondragon point it out?

New theory on the cause of the infamous Tunnel Vision problem - Testers needed!

If they were exposed to UV light they would indeed fail that fast. Those dolls I talked about started destabilising in the 80’s. And for that matter, PoweMac plastic cased became brittle from UV exposure after around 10 years as well.

What System Software do you recommend running for the PowerBook 140

This. I’m always blown away by the people who don’t know 8.6 is the first version of Classic Mac OS with a PPC-native kernel and recommend 8.5 instead. I’m also puzzled by people that recommend Mac OS X 10.5 on a PowerPC Mac. There’s very little PPC-only Mac OS X software and the main reason to...

New theory on the cause of the infamous Tunnel Vision problem - Testers needed!

People used to think plastic was forever, but it’s not. Early 1960’s Barbie dolls have vinyl faces that look shiny because the plastic is destabilising and returning to oil. Other early plastics are becoming brittle, again, from destabilising. It’s more likely that the type of plastic used for...

Tunnel Vision On Monochrome Active Matrix Powerbooks

The ones I have seen Colin from “This Does Not Compute” use are new old stock, which isn’t ideal.
