    Lisa OS Open-source?

Good on ya, CHM and Apple. The QuickDraw source is already open (I think, as part of the MacPaint source), and I also seem to recall a Folklore article that said that QuickDraw is the same between the Lisa and the Mac. The Lisa and Mac OSes are pretty different, as we know, so this might not be...

BlueSCSI Performance on Macintosh Plus: What speed do you get?

why spam here, out of all the Compact Mac threads... I ran the tests I mentioned. File size makes no difference, and the card doesn't matter either. I tested with a brand-new 256 GB Samsung EVO Select, pre-formatted as exFAT, and the access time was identical to the original Sandisk Ultra. I...

BlueSCSI Performance on Macintosh Plus: What speed do you get?

I had another theory: maybe large files slow down the SdFat library (what's used under the hood). The disk file I was testing on was 1 GB, I'm going to try a 100MB file and see if there's any difference.

BlueSCSI Performance on Macintosh Plus: What speed do you get?

On my Plus (I'm using Transoft Pro 4.0 for testing and r0w0s6 SCSI Accelerator), I get average ~13 ms seek and 2.05 ms access, with max read/write at 432 KB/s. It's impressive, but I think the access times are much too high, so I'm planning on testing with some other SD cards. That data is with...

    How dangerous are RIFAs?

Well, fortune is on my side. It seems that somebody got to this analog board before I did and installed film caps in place of the RIFAs. Picture for reference, see the red caps next to the small transformer and the blue/green/white toroid.

    How dangerous are RIFAs?

Ok, then. Thank you both. I'll check for capacitor cracks (I highly doubt they've been replaced), and if they're bad or old I'll desolder them completely. I want to go over the analog board anyway to check for and reflow cracked joints. If I have a DigiKey order for another project, I'll grab...

    How dangerous are RIFAs?

I've got a Mac Plus that appears to be stock (aside from 4MB of RAM) and I'm wondering about the RIFA caps. First of all, do I really need to replace them? I'm not adverse to soldering---the analog board probably has cracked joints anyway---but I don't like waiting for parts (and paying $10...

Willing to pay someone for a mac plus system...

This image is 224 MB and has System 6.0.8 installed. I used Network Software Installer 1.4.4, because 1.5.1 as specified on the RaSCSI wiki requires System 7. I installed AppleTalk 58.1.3 and all the EtherTalk and TokenTalk drivers. The drivers probably aren't needed, but they're there anyway...

Willing to pay someone for a mac plus system...

What are the "network tools"? I see no mention in the RaSCSI wiki, are they the MacTCP configuration tools?

Interested but confused about 68k PowerBooks

On the Mac Plus I borrowed, I used a Power Mac 5260 (the one I mentioned earlier) to make some System 6 floppies with some good software, then I built a serial cable and used ZTerm to transfer files. It was slow, but it worked---and much faster than Macintosh Kermit, my initial attempt! Like I...

Interested but confused about 68k PowerBooks

Restoration, to me, is more rewarding when necessary components (outer case, for example) don't just fall apart. I think it would be a much wiser investment to go for machines known to be reliable, with n years of innovation behind them.

Interested but confused about 68k PowerBooks

So for practical purposes, either the 1400 series or the G3s. I recognize that this is a hobby, and I'm certainly not expecting any PowerBook to be some kind of world-class laptop. Even so, I think it's reasonable to want a machine that won't fail ten different ways one week after you buy it...

Interested but confused about 68k PowerBooks

Crumbling is a concern of mine: I once got to replace an IDE hard drive in a Power Mac 5260/100, and the plastic crumbled like cake. I would feel bad about the damage I ended up doing, except that it's a 5260 :D. I had no idea that SD-IDE adapters were commonplace, nor that BlueSCSIs tend to...

Interested but confused about 68k PowerBooks

The only issue with those later models is that they use an IDE drive, and there aren't a lot of solid-state replacements for those. The mSATA adapters appear to be the only option, and those are not renowned for reliability. BlueSCSI is much more appealing to me.

Interested but confused about 68k PowerBooks

I'd rather take the bother of slow refresh than have an intermittent/time-based issue like tunnel vision. Something about technology problems like that bug me. It's often recommended to replace capacitors in devices anyway, because a) if they haven't leaked yet, there's a moderate chance they...

Interested but confused about 68k PowerBooks

Thank you everybody! Sounds like from a sustainability point of view, passive matrix or color (or both, 165c anyone?) is better---I'm fine with recapping, but replacing display layers is a little more than I feel confident about. I'm definitely looking to tinker and I am totally up for...

Interested but confused about 68k PowerBooks

Hi all, This isn't a buy-sell post, it's more like a question post. I'm interested in getting a 68k PowerBook, because I want a Classic 68K Mac without having to store a Compact Mac or a pizza box+monitor. Also, the performance in the 68k PBs seems pretty good (better than a Mac Plus at least!)...

G4 cube fully supported Linux ?

Oh I see. I thought you wanted it to be a full Linux install. With that, I admit that I have no idea :p. If you think you can build the (patched) driver, go for it. Do you know if TecnoballZ is known to work with the Rage 128 and/or the G4 Cube?

G4 cube fully supported Linux ?

Oh it's kernel 2...I thought you were running something, well, modern. I agree, there's no way to get the Rage to work with just config in your case. Why do you want to run YDL3? Like davewongillies said, modern Linux might be an easier choice. TecnoballZ is from 2014, I bet there's a good...

G4 cube fully supported Linux ?

Do what startx is telling you, show what /var/log/Xorg.0.log has to say. A quick Google shows that some work has been done on the Rage 128 driver: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ATI-RAGE-128-Linux-6.12.0. You might just need to install it, if my experiences with Arch Linux...
