I’d be skeptical on suggesting the ac adapter is dead. Try squeezing the outer metal contact that surrounds the 4 pins, it gets loose over time. My 520c was working completely fine and I had the same issue OP has. Couldn’t hurt to try.
Would the caps leaking cause ghosting like in a passive matrix display? There are adjustment pots alongside the 180c display but my screen still looks way off.
Okay so here's the current situation, I cannot install System 7 onto the CFPM after partitioning/initializing it with a patched HD Setup. It gave an error twice about not being able to write to it in my PB180c and my PB100. I popped in my disk tools and ran first aid. And sure enough, "Macintosh...
Well it seems my spare scsi drive chooched her last breath with the same symptoms as the PB100s original drive. It spins up and “initializes” fine but then a rapid ticking noise every few seconds follows. Could this be an issue with the last cap I didn’t replace on the daughter board? I ended up...
Good news! I “finished” recapping the PB100 and to my surprise all those headaches vanished. Speaker cracking, death tone, erratic booting are all gone now. The fix was simply to finish recapping the entire logic board.
As for the power supply, I cracked it open and there’s no corrosion, fish...
I recently got my hands on a PB 100 with the common BSOD, which meant it needed to be recapped completely. Fast forward to today and I was about done with the recap, only needing about 5 on the LB and the ones behind the display. Out of my curiosity I decided to partially assemble it and attempt...
Usually the flux in the solder isn't enough to allow it to stick, besides it cleans up nicely with alcohol (in my case of recapping a Duo it did anyway). Using wick is fine, if it sticks just hold the iron on the spot to free the wick.
Very nice and informative video but there's a few issues, you didn't use while soldering was flux. The method you used might create weak solder joints and is just overall more difficult to get solder to "stick" to components and the pads. I highly recommend getting some good quality solder and...
Sheesh, that bad huh? I guess I shouldn't have powered it on at all. It's getting worse with the machine powered off as well. Well at least I have one in my collection, who knew active matrix would've been plagued by this. At least my 190 is fine. Would a recapping guide be of any use to you...
I know this is a common issue with active matrix screens on the 170s but is there truly no way of fixing it? I recently just got a 170 and 190cs and they both booted right up. Would recapping effect the screen at all or is doing anything to the PowerBook even worth it at this point? I'll snap...
PLEASE NOTE: In the recapping section of the guide I noticed I made a mistake in the list of caps needed for the logic board. It should be 3x 100uf 35v (10mm in height) instead of 3x 100uf 25v. FOLLOW THE PICTURE DIAGRAM INSTEAD! I really don't know why the forums don't let you edit posts after...
I was going to use JB Kwikweld but I found some JB Plasticweld on Amazon as I mentioned in the guide: http://a.co/75JQXgo So far it's holding up just fine, it's been more than a week since I repaired the casing.
Actually I did try separating the bezel from the LCD panel but I believe it's held in with adhesive somewhere. Although I'm not sure, when I was recapping the LCD I decided to leave the bezel in place.
Thank you for the compliments! Unfortunately I won't be keeping this machine much longer as a 1400c has taken it's place (for now ;) ). Tomorrow you'll be seeing the Duo in the trading post. And I am sure jealous that you have a 2400c, I've always wanted one but jeez the prices for those are...
-- Recapping the Logic Board and LCD Panel --
This is probably the most important part when restoring a vintage Macintosh of any kind, replacing the capacitors. This insures the logic board won't get damaged by the electrolyte inside the leaking caps, causing damage beyond repair in certain...
Evening everyone! I finally completed "restoring" my PBDuo230, not without having some type of headaches unfortunately. This post will be split into two posts due to my permissions to post images.
Let's start shall we?
-- Fixing the "Dead" Keyboard --
My initial idea for this machine was to...
Alright I decided to create a single thread for my PowerBook Duo (and others coming soon, maybe) to consolidate everything since I've been creating one too many threads for small things. I'll list everything here of what I've done and what I'll do to semi-restore my 230. Here's my list of things...
