I realize all of these variants have the same board, but is the firmware the same across all 3 models? I don't see a FW sticker on my Q605 board, not sure how pull this information? But perhaps all of yours are 475 versions and mine is a Q605 thus the difference? Probably all the same, but...

Any other tests/help I can provide?

Do you have any machines with an 040 and hardware cpu cache? I wonder how much improvement that makes? I believe MicroMac made a CPU socket cache card for the Q605s and equiv but I've been searching for years without luck.

I'm now questioning the 1M of VRAM, was 99% sure I upgraded this machine? The highest resolution option I have is 832x624@16bit, I seem to recall that should be higher with 1M? I might be remembering incorrectly... The sims are not labeled, will have to Google the chip numbers I guess.

Very interesting! Was the 475/Q605 not released at the same time? Meaning from the factory they would have most likely had the same VRAM chip speeds? I can't think of any other reason the firmware would treat each model different? I could see maybe if in this case the 475 was release later...

Yeah that takes all the fun out of it. MicroMac shows a CPU socket Quadra cache card, only 128k, I suspect they were quite rare as I've never even heard of one out in the wild. https://www.micromac.com/products/quadra_cache_cards.html

The standard Motorola 040 datasheet doesn't mention or outline how an external cache is wired/configured.  Anyone have any such documentation?  I had thoughts of making a CPU socket card for my Q605.

The datecode, 0823, indicates it was manufactured in 2008?  Were 5v 040s even produced that late?

Are you running yours at 25Mhz?  An L88M running at 40Mhz might run that hot at idle. But I agree, it sure looks genuine.

If the CPU is at idle reading upper 40sC, then it's for-sure not a L88M, mostly likely a 0.8um XC.

My old XC at idle runs about 48C with the cover off and no heat sink.  I've read here somewhere that the L88M runs cool to the touch at idle, no heatsink?

Has anyone ever found one of the ~2000 or so L88M mask 040s?   I'd be very curious to test the heat output vs my Q605 XC 040.

Please post a pict of the board once it arrives (for chip dates), also curious would be the 040 Mask ID!
