CF Card: IDE vs Cardbus, any speed difference?

Thanks for the further replies to this topic - I've now found an excellent PATA to CF-card adapter and it does seem noticeably a little quicker. I know not to expect miracles though, especially given the removal of L2 cache in this model and its early year of manufacture. The system is entirely...

CF Card: IDE vs Cardbus, any speed difference?

Thanks Byrd, that's good to know. I have 7.6 and 8.5 installed on two separate CF cards, they both boot ok on my 5300ce - no problems so far - but performance feels sluggish for a 117MHz chip. Offhand, I don't suppose you can recommend either a CF-IDE or SD-IDE adapter please? Cheers!, Matt

CF Card: IDE vs Cardbus, any speed difference?

Hi, When using compact flash adapters, is there any benefit (speed/stability) to using internal IDE over a card bay? Thanks.

PB 5300 Logic Board transplant advice

Cheers Bibilit, really looking forward to this little project, actually thinking of putting the internals into a small cube case along-side a Socket 478 system (Win 98), so a dual system case. Was never into PC stuff back in the day, always Mac, so it'll be kinda interesting for me.

PB 5300 Logic Board transplant advice

That looks the same, yes - I can see the battery connect on the top-right. Is that the daughter board? If so, I'll leave it in situ if the entire system is reliant on it. Thanks!

PB 5300 Logic Board transplant advice

I'm not sure if it's classed as the daughter board, the official repair guide says power supply board - maybe they're one and the same thing? Thanks for replying!

PB 5300 Logic Board transplant advice

Hi, I'm moving my PowerBook 5300 logic board to a separate, small computer case, and would like some advice please. Specifically, the Power Supply Board (part #661-1056) ; it's removable from the main logic board and the battery plugs directly into this. Is it safe to remove this if I no longer...

    Drive setup help needed for 128GB dual-boot (7.5.3 + 8.1)

Thanks Gorgonops, I have 32MB on the 1400C at the moment, and seems quite responsive. Personally I preferred (still do prefer) the cleaner look of System 7 but probably used more apps under 8+. I've gone ahead and formatted one partition at 4GB for 7.5.3 and the remainder 124GB as HFS extended...

    Drive setup help needed for 128GB dual-boot (7.5.3 + 8.1)

Thanks AlpineRaven, logically this makes perfect sense and probably the way to go if money were no object [:D] . To be honest, I'm the proverbial kid in the candy store (ok, well a 46-yr-old kid in a candy store then hehe). It's been a while since I've used Classic Mac but recall the apps I...

    Drive setup help needed for 128GB dual-boot (7.5.3 + 8.1)

Thank you Gorgonops, you've given me a lot to think about here. I read (somewhere...!) that System 7 was preferred by some due to it running much quicker than System 8. Is there any truth to that? Or is any speed difference negligible?

    Drive setup help needed for 128GB dual-boot (7.5.3 + 8.1)

Hi, I'm about to setup my 1400C for dual-booting systems 7.5.3 and 8.1. I've read that 7.5.3 will only support 4GB max partition whereas 8.1 is good for up to 2TB. So, I recently got hold of a nice 1400C that already has a 8GB CF card in place of its spinning HD (7.5.3 and 8.1 installed on 2 x...

SSD in a 6500, anyone successfull?

Glad I wasn't the only one to benefit from this thread! But now the Mac is up and running I'm curious if CF cards have the longevity of an SSD, not sure how they compare to an SD card though. That aside, it still seems incredible to have a near-silent running 6500. Thank you guys again for your...

SSD in a 6500, anyone successfull?

Thanks for your recommendations on how to troubleshoot the hissing speakers, would be great if it was a semi-easy fix! I'll get around to fixng them at some point soon though and will refer back to your suggestions  :lc:

SSD in a 6500, anyone successfull?

Thank you for the link! Given that CF cards seem to work can we assume that they support PIO Mode 4 and LBA then? I did a very quick google and Wikipedia lookup and, if my basic brain is right, CF cards are good.

SSD in a 6500, anyone successfull?

YES!!! Thank you x a million for your advice and links - I got my 6500 up and working with the CF card adapter today and it's running beautifully :)  not a single problem! Heaven!

SSD in a 6500, anyone successfull?

Many thanks for that Trash80toHP_Mini - It never occured to me try different software! Is this the one: FWB Hard Disk ToolKit 4.5.2 ? - If so I presume I could burn to a bootable CD and give it a try? Or do you know of any bootable .img files floating around out there with this already...

SSD in a 6500, anyone successfull?

Oh, I meant to write Drive Setup not Disk Utility! My bad. I booted from the 8.5 install CD (and I also tried the OS 9.1 CD). Thing is, Drive Setup usually does show ATA as well as SCSI devices but nothing shows up when I attach an SSD via adapter. I've tried a Samsung Evo 840 120gb and a...

SSD in a 6500, anyone successfull?

I think for my next vintage Mac I will consult the Tarot first then haha, but that business about the guy testing software RAID speaks volumes - makes me think yea, not much has changed either! You'd think that in the digital world of 1s and 0s there would be less to go wrong, not more (well, in...

SSD in a 6500, anyone successfull?

I won't claim to intially understand much of that but it sounds reasonable (after a quick Google of the acronyms!), but the whole thing seems a crapshoot with some people getting a machine to work and others not...even with identical hardware. With how challening it is to get these old machines...
