    Finally got a Macintosh II!

Well done! I remember the first time I saw a Macintosh II. They had just been released, and my college's computer center had a few. I was in awe at the color picture, the expansion slots, and the sheer size of the thing; it was so very different a machine in appearance and abilities from my...

    IBook G3 or G4

My experience with a white iBook G3/500 and a G3/600 was not good. Tons of screws, irritating to disassemble. Just to replace the hard drive with an SSD turned into a disaster. I’ve taken apart, repaired, upgraded, and then reassembled a couple dozen Mac laptops (a mix of PowerBook G3’s...

SE/30 with DayStar Turbo 040 Struggles

The Turbo 040 cannot be plugged into the PDS slot, and does require an adapter such as the Twinspark or Bolle’s. Bolle’s is more compatible with the Turbo 040. As you say, you could fry it without the adapter. The cache slot it fits into is the one that places the card horizontally over the...

SE/30 with DayStar Turbo 040 Struggles

Same problem here (description along with troubleshooting so far in detail below). I wonder if there is residual corrosion with effects that are seen only when stressed with the requirements of an 040 . Can crystals can go out of whack over time? Is it worth replacing those to see if that...

The SE/30 as a Part of Classic Macs

The depreciation of Macs back then was truly impressive. In 1991, I was irritated with how slow my Mac Plus was in comparison with the SE/30 I was using in the lab. I estimated that it would be about 10 years until I could afford to spend the $4,000+ for an SE/30. Ten years passed, and I...

Need help getting a Sonnet Crescendo G4/1000MHz PCI to work

Thanks for the advice. It was well worth a try but, although the extension loads, I get an error when launching the control panel. Neither it nor XLR8 Mach Speed Control enables the cache or Altivec. Oddly enough, when I tried an old hard drive from when I bought the Sonnet CPU, with the...

Seeking advice on final resolution with eBay seller.

Keep in mind that reaching out and paying the seller outside of eBay risks losing your eBay account, as it violates eBay rules (eBay will miss out on their share of the payment). I ran into a similar situation not too long ago, and ended up having to live with feeling lousy about it. In your...

Need help getting a Sonnet Crescendo G4/1000MHz PCI to work

I’m having trouble getting a Sonnet Crescendo PCI 1GHz up and running in my Power Mac 8600 (Kansas) or 9600 (Tsunami). An 800MHz version of that card in the same Macs works fine. Symptoms: - The Mac freezes while loading the Sonnet extension(2.3 or 3.1). - With the Sonnet extension disabled...

Mac Plus keyboard and mouse options

If you can find a MacPro Plus keyboard by Key Tronic, it will work with a Mac Plus, any Mac with an ADB port, and (with the help of a USB adapter like the BMOW Wombat or a Griffin iMate) a computer with a USB port.

Help with Macintosh SE/30 (bright horizontal line after recapping the Logic board)

For the SE/30, you can’t check the -12V through the floppy port. I cannot recall my source of info for that, but I read about it after building a floppy drive port voltmeter, and getting 0V on the -12V line on every booting SE/30 in my possession.

How hot should old 50-pin SCSI drives be?

If you are referring to those full height full width 9.1GB 50 pin server drives, someone in the Dealchat forum around the turn of the century described them as “fire-breathing.”

I Finally Built My Own Power Mac G4!!

My Ti-4600 was just as you describe - it didn’t bring much more, despite Norton System Info reporting much better performance.

ShopGoodwill FTW! Sealed G4 Processor Upgrade

I believe there was a generic cache enabler that worked for G4 upgrades; I recall installing it on my B&W. I don't currently have easy access to my Mac software from that era, but will provide details if/when I locate it.

ShopGoodwill FTW! Sealed G4 Processor Upgrade

Cool! An OWC G4 450MHz ZIF CPU made a very satisfying improvement in the performance of my B&W way back when.

What spares to keep on hand for SE/30 repair?

The op amp on my logic board is a TL071B, and I wanted to stick with a direct replacement. Looking over the datasheet, page 17 lists the B version as having a lower input offset voltage, so it seems to be a somewhat higher spec device. I don't imagine this makes much of a difference in this...

Great resource, and one that answers a few more questions I had. Many thanks, indeed!

What spares to keep on hand for SE/30 repair?

Do you know if the two small radial crystals are the same as each other, and what the specs are? I believe them both to be 32.768kHz, but am uncertain, and don’t know their capacitance or ESR. Are crystal capacitance and ESR critical for the SE/30, or can any of the several available radial...

What spares to keep on hand for SE/30 repair?

I have CRT’s, NOS flybacks, a couple bad logic boards for parts that can’t be obtained elsewhere, and the following recently purchased IC’s that are corroded by capacitor electrolyte on (all of) my boards: 1. AMD AM26LS30JC (had to buy in a pack of 46) 2. SN74LS166AD (Digikey part#...
