Getting files onto old compact Macs

Scrub my previous comment about this being a friendly community. What I meant was that out of the box (or whatever they arrived in), for example my plus and classic 2 don't have any network interfaces. It is possible to buy SE/30 ethernet cards, SCSI to ethernet adaptors, but what I am finding...

Getting files onto old compact Macs

Networking needs the ethernet mac adaptor. I do have a crossover cable that could be used to share onto the Linux box, and I've been trying to fix the phone line into mission control to put the wireless router (with 4 RJ45 ports). Sneakernet is the easiest way. In my mind the compacts were...

    Finally, an Intel

A good find! The Cash Converters here usually has no such bargains. Any macs they do get are overpriced and snapped up by wannabe 'club DJs' (ie. beat matching software on an mp3 player...). Or Pentium 4s for several hundred quid. I usually just nip in to see what N64/Dreamcast/PS2/Xbox (360...

    Macintosh 512k ED

It screams MiniITX / Mac Mini project to me, with a cooling fan on top, or perhaps built in iPod/Phone dock. vMac installed too of course.

Getting files onto old compact Macs

The exchange was somewhat out of place and somewhat out of character for what I have experienced thus far to be a friendly forum full of enthusiasts. On Topic: In terms of SCSI drives, can these be hooked up to a PC? A SCSI card needed? Or, what I was thinking of using SCSI zip drive -&gt...

    "Mini/30" Custom system

You could put a Raspberry Pi in there and have a nice little music server / general purpose without splashing out for a full Mini. Though is there an ARM port of MiniVmac?

    The Current 128K Phenomenon

I see it as a combination of apple riding the crest of the iphone wave and the current trend for retro. They're like classic cars, people bought up classics in the 80s and then after the 90s recession they weren't worth that much. Enjoy them for what they are but people shouldn't be stockpiling...

    "Mini/30" Custom system

Nice work! If I was classic case-ing, I'd be LCDing because I'm scared of CRTs. However that monochrome VGA monitor looks almost stock! MiniVMac on and it'll have the same functionality it had previously :) I like the Power LED through the vents too!

    Mac Plus screen flicker

Sounds like a solder bad connection issue. But regarding plugs, I once had a desktop PC that was flaky to get up and running. Sometimes it would boot, sometimes it wouldn't. I changed the lead and it worked perfectly. So I am not sure if some "kettle" style leads change resistance over their...

New photo album of my Mac Plus

I mind the day we got a shipment of PCs over from the US office. The IT guy was testing them in his den. We heard this huge bang. Rushed in, he said "oops" - he had kept the PSU at 110v and plugged it into 240v. He then proceeded to do it again! 8-o

New photo album of my Mac Plus

The UK/Ireland is 240v, presumably it shares a PSU with the international models?

New photo album of my Mac Plus

No no, I was just commenting on an interesting thread / find. Few years ago had an interest in localisation through some internationalisation projects that went through verification at IBM. In terms of academic macs, I had a beige G3 and an LC475 that came from St Andrews (when they upgraded...

New photo album of my Mac Plus

Was this because of the rendering of fonts / scans of physical texts were clearer? Interesting to read of pioneering applications for the platform.

New photo album of my Mac Plus

Looks interesting. With the system being Hebrew, would it have made sense to have the apple menu on the right, with the menus right aligned? Serious question, I'm interested in localisation differences.

System Saver questions I thought might help others

haha, is that a serious product? :) It looks like a MacStove :) Another idea of what to do with a dead compact's case :) The plus is silent, it's uncanny. But if I'd spent a few grand (£/$ 000s) in the 80s I'd be looking to protect my expensive equipment!

Mac Plus analog board insulator card.

Is that the bit of card at the back? Mine was held on with 4 little clips that were a pain to get off and then get back on without breaking them.

System Saver questions I thought might help others

I'm surprised System Saver Mac isn't more popular, with the fan for the Plus and early compacts.

The fish that got away . . .

Recently on ebay, a Commodore 64 Web.it, max bid of €15 (approx £11) on German ebay. They're quite rare, there is one on UK ebay for £100, and something (along with a C64x) that I wouldn't mind in the collection. Last minute sniper got it for €15.50. Bit glad though, as the keyboard would be...

    Mini vMac for Android

Interesting! Are there any Android phones that have a proper Nokia style flip down keyboard and a Sony Ericcson K800 style joystick control that could be used as a mouse?

    Discharge a CRT?

I tended to use an approach starting with "leave uplugged for a week" then "yank the power cord" when testing solder fix. I didn't touch the CRT when it was open though, focusing on the analogue board. (For liabilities sake follow Apples advice.)
