I have been down that road also. The telling thing is that while running, I can freeze it up totally, and I can do it on demand!

I have been running a B&W G3 Rev. A. for quite a few years without incident. Note However, that it uses a scsi pci card, and therefor, scsi HDD, both internal and external, bootable... Zero problems, Think I'll Keep her a few more years...

Heck I'll try it... probably on the peecee first, they are after all disposable! And I kinda have a clue that the problem rests in the video chip, so I know where to concentrate my efforts...

BTW the sonnet software does Not seem to be a necessity to run the sonnet cpu... so that is not an obstacle!

With an external drive that size, we could back-up 4 or 5 of our imacs!!!
It is not uncommon at our place to have more than one machine backed-up on a single external drive.

It has been awhile, so be patient w/ me... But, Apple Talk via ethernet [crossover] cable, should let you do the deed without removing the HDD['s]. I would at least try it using target disk mode, on the Lombard.
Course, I have not done it using those particular machines... so I may stand...
