    Finally got a Macintosh II!

Fun memories! My last semester of college was about to end, and I was worried that I'd no longer be able to get student pricing on the just-announced Mac II, but I just made it, though there was initially a question as to whether such a high-end machine would be offered to students. Even so, the...

The SE/30 as a Part of Classic Macs

Best not to attempt powering up that old iMac G5 until you replace those capacitors, assuming that they haven't leaked their corrosive guts over everything. For me, the early days of the personal computing revolution were fun! Stuff could be super-expensive, and there were so many cool ideas...

    AS/400 Connectivity

Crazy thing was, said ex-employer was relying on that AS/400, maybe beyond 2010? Only switched to something more modern when HIPAA demanded it. Wasn't so much worried about the AS/400, as IBM still had people on the ground to service it. But the Andrew hardware and software hadn't been supported...

    AS/400 Connectivity

I wouldn't be surprised if those Apple cards were simply rebranded Andrew products, which were available for ISA bus and NuBus. I can't remember the name of the associated software, but my last employer had a couple of the cards installed in a Quadra 950, and it served as a Token Ring > IP...

    Pico Mac Nano - wow!

Is it's creator here? If so, awesome, hope that the switch to injection-molded cases makes it even better. https://9to5mac.com/2025/06/01/pico-mac-nano-tiny-original-macintosh-replica/

    Advice on Mac Portable selling?

Sell as-is for "whatever". Good restored condition, $200+, but you will need to invest more than $200 worth of parts and labor to get it there :p

Quicktake 100 and 150 Recapping Guide

Good work! Some oddly-shaped photo flash capacitors are still available, but they're often special-order items from Mouser or Digikey, with minimum orders being 1000 pieces. Other sources include AliExpress (can't guarantee that name-brand parts are genuine though), and they can also sometimes...

    Laserwriter II Ozone Filter

TBH, I had no idea that anyone was concerned about ozone and particulate emissions until much more recently. I did a search for "printer ozone filter" and came up with a bunch of hits for what looks like the same sort of carbonized foamy material one might buy for home air filters.

Dim and Yellow display PB 520c

I had a similar issue with a G4 iBook, but changing the CCFL tube didn't fix the problem as I had hoped. Perhaps the actual problem was the LCD's laminations were degrading. The very expensive, circa 2007 Leica M8 digital camera's LCD had a similar issue, which has been dubbed "coffee staining".

Using Apple II as a dumb terminal?

What serial device are you attempting to connect to? If you are attempting to connect two computers, you'll want a null modem adapter. Also, with USB-Serial adapter plugged into the Mac, what results does "lsusb" reveal? If you don't see your device listed, there's likely a driver issue.

MicroMac, a Macintosh for under £5

https://axio.ms//projects/2024/06/16/MicroMac.html Just discovered this, am kind of surprised that no one (including it's creator) has mentioned it here.

New acquisitions: MacPro 2010 and XServe 2009

My Xserve memory is a bit hazy, but I think the drive type depends partly on whether or not you have the optional RAID card installed. But either way, the drive connector will give you a pretty good idea of what's needed. Be on the lookout for internal backup batteries used for write cache (RAID...

Subwoofer to pair with AppleDesign Powered Speakers I

Subwoofers are common items in my local thrift stores, but many are not ideal for what you have in mind, as they may have only a single input connector, or none at all, as in the case of wireless subwoofers. Ideally, you want one which has both line-in and line-out connectors. Here are a couple...

Does this sound like a reasonable price?

Shipping an SE from out of town could easily cost more than the machine itself, and then you hope that it doesn't get destroyed in transit.

Does this sound like a reasonable price?

eBay price varies a lot depending on whether the goods need to be shipped, and how far. Whereas the Craiglist price is likely to be negotiable, especially if OP shows up with cash in hand. Regarding SE/30 and other "ultimate" machines: Never forget that they're still just as obsolete :p

    Recapping mac classic problem

Multimeter is the wrong tool: You want a capacitor ESR meter specifically designed for in-circuit testing. Else just assume that the surface mount electrolytic capacitors all need replacing, because when we're talking Classic/Classic II/Portable, they likely do.

Does this sound like a reasonable price?

Like beauty, value is in the eye of the beholder! Yes, I can remember literally picking up SE/30s from someone's trash, but this was 20+ years ago. Today, when stuff comes up for sale, it might be located in a distant part of the country, or part of an all-or-nothing storage unit cleaning. So...

    25,000mAh PowerBook 1xx battery

You can do that with chargers specifically designed for the purpose, and it's a great way to squeeze some extra life out of those batteries, though the recharged batteries tend to be kinda weak, and no promises that they won't eventually leak, as internal pressure builds up.

Color Classic - no signs of life

Do you have a battery installed? I think some models won't start without one, IDK if CC is one of them.
