Hrmm... in my field, software has an immense effect on hardware. A programming error I made destroyed a $30,000 piece of hardware once. I've also broken many smaller things worth a total of over $10,000. But on consumer electronics, generally not. :p

Just got a 512MB module for my MBP for free from a friend who upgraded her peecee laptop... now I have 1.5GB... Definitely an improvement! Now I can run parallels and open Q-DAS without everything slowing to a crawl. [8D]

I'm almost certain that you have a dead battery. My PM6100 has the same symptoms when its PRAM battery dies. To test this, power it on and wait for the chime, then turn it off and then back on immediately. The machine should continue booting after doing this. Good luck! :D

I finally recovered from the... crash? When I lost power to the shed for a week, the non-graceful shutdown seemed to kill the server... I have a new motherboard in it now and it seems to be OK. Let me know of any issues Sorry :-/

I actually have one of those chip puller tools, and like everything else, the tool made for the job works the best. :p Otherwise, in a pinch I use a tiny screwdriver and slowly pry around the processor until it pops out. Now on overclocking... I have had a Quadra 605 with a full '040/25...
