    iDevice Conquests.

Hey, that original iPhone is a perfectly serviceable phone, certainly better than any free feature phone out there. My wife just stopped using hers a month ago because she dropped it and cracked the screen. We "upgraded" her to a 3G, and I'll sell the phone, because much as I love it's design, I...

    BRAND NEW iMac! (G3-powered!)

If part of you wants to use it, then I say use it and enjoy it. Nothing wrong with pure collecting for the long term, but something this perfect ought to be experienced, IMO. I would definitely replace the battery anyhow--just because it hasn't been in use doesn't mean the battery won't go...

    512k in the house

I've determined that, with the M0001W model number, and the ability to use 800k disks, this 512 had the Macintosh Plus Disk Drive Kit installed at some point. Add in the external drive and the bag, and this thing had a fair amount of dough spent on it. Not bad for free! (It was free to my dad...

    512k in the house

Little did I know, there was a disk in the external drive (I hadn't hooked it up before today). It booted up to Finder 5.1, which did show a . after 512K. Yet, the model number is M0001W by all external signs. Maybe somebody upgraded the ROM at some point - I haven't opened it up yet. But I...

    512k in the house

My dad paid a visit, and rather than just the 8-pin serial cable I asked for, he unexpectedly brought an entire bagged Mac 512k! He has two, you see, and I was hoping to get one a little while ago, but I went ahead and got my Mac Plus anyway. Now I am surprised and delighted to have two...

    Anyone still use firewire drives?

I use a FireWire drive attached to an iMac G3 to house all my ripped DVDs and downloaded TV shows - sure beats USB 1!. I don't have the need for target disk mode all that often, but it has come in handy a time or two: I'm glad my 2006 iMac has the capability. And of course before the Flip era...

    Mac Plus Revival!

Durrrrr... That's obvious enough. Thanks guys! Guess I'll need to get a couple more 1 MB SIMMs. They seem to appear in the Trading Post pretty regularly. No sense running around little more than half full!

    Mac Plus Revival!

Here's another puzzle, to me anyway. When I looked at the RAM the first time, it looked like 4 MB to me. The "1000" on the chips of the Korean SIMMs I took to mean 1 MB, and likewise the "640" on the NEC SIMMs I took to really mean 1 MB, having come from DOS land where 640K meant you still had...

    Mac Plus Revival!

I did pick up some lithium grease at Kragen today, so tonight I proceeded with the cleaning and lubeing of the disk drive, per the instructions in the wiki. Got it all back together, put the drive back in the Plus, and tried it out. Damn if it didn't still stick on eject! I carefully pulled it...

    Mac Plus Revival!

To name a few battery sources: Amazon Radio Shack Battery Mart A Google search on "A133 battery" reveals many sources, unless I am mistaken on the battery type, 4.5V 600mAh. This is pretty much the last thing I need to worry about--no need to keep a battery in it until I am regularly using it!

    Mac Plus Revival!

Tonight I took the floppy drive out, in anticipation of picking up some lithium grease tomorrow to refurbish it. I couldn't believe how easy and obvious it was; for a machine that was never intended to be user-serviceable, it sure is friendly on the inside. Contrast that with my 8100, which is...

    Mac Plus Revival!

Well, then I'm well within beige territory, as my production week is 5 according to the serial. I'm glad; I think the "plain front" compacts look best in original beige. :beige: And it means the case isn't as far yellow as I originally thought. Even though I knew they were there, I was a...

    Mac Plus Revival!

Edit to my first post: For posterity and anyone digging up this thread for troubleshooting advice, the clean and re-seat your SIMMs tip came from jagshouse.com, not the classic Mac PDF at 68kmla.com/files/.

    Mac Plus Revival!

All set up: The Unboxing can be seen here: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjygaMSF Funny thing is, I'm pretty sure it was a beige, though the production year is 87. Can that be right? Anyhow, the pic doesn't do justice to how jaundiced it really is. And I spoke too soon about the floppy drive; on...

    Mac Plus Revival!

Thanks to the Xmas Wishlist swap thread, just yesterday I received my one and only 68k wish: a Mac Plus to work on. User aubrick reported that the Plus appeared to be suffering from an intermittent reboot problem, but he couldn't test further owing to his lack of a system disk. Quite yellow...
