Java SE 6.0 Release 1 Developer Preview 2?

Rumor has it that this is the last release of Java 6 that would install on a G5... unfortunately the file seems to have vanished from the internet. It was pushed to ADC on 17 May 2006. Anyone have a copy floating around?

Found a sound in Quadra 700/900 ROM, but can't extract.

I can verify that the PowerBook 140 ROM is identical to the Q700 ROM. I dumped mine a while ago. Unfortunately, the computer itself has since died and fallen to pieces, so I can't test it on the actual hardware.

    Hotline server for *nix

Never mind, I got MHXD figured out, it was just dependency hell.

    Hotline server for *nix

I'm trying to set up a hotline server for the classic mac crew over on SA forums, and I can't find a working hotline server daemon out there. shxd consistently segfaults when a user connects and mhxd prints several pages of errors when I try to build it. Are there any maintained forks out there?

One of the first netbooks ever... AST Ascentia M-series

Nice... so the reseller in Singapore didn't actually have the cable they claimed to have. So I'm not out $25, but I also still have no way of getting stuff on or off of this system. Code Micro has a crap ton of parts that may or may not be right, but they also don't have pictures of...

One of the first netbooks ever... AST Ascentia M-series

Windows 95 means no wireless and no even remotely modern browsers. I'm going to put in a 128 MB stick and try either a trimmed version of Win2k or slackware. Id' do gentoo so I could really tweak it, but on a 200 MHz Cyrix mobile processor it would probably take a month of straight compiling...

One of the first netbooks ever... AST Ascentia M-series

Ouch! A replacement CD cable from the computer recycler in Singapore that (apparently) bought all the unsold stock was $25! That one cable cost me 6 times what I paid for the computer and it's accessories.

One of the first netbooks ever... AST Ascentia M-series

Haha, looks like I've been beat. Oh well, this thing is still quite a quirky toy. I've got a spare 80GB HDD and I figure, if I can ever find a cable for the external CD, I'll load it up with a trimmed version of slackware and a frontend of some sort to play my mp3s in the car. Possibly with...

One of the first netbooks ever... AST Ascentia M-series

I was at SalVal today, and found a small leather bag which contained a fully functional AST 280M notebook. Specs: Cyrix (Ha! Remember them?) 200GXM CPU 32 MB RAM 8" 640x480 color screen External CD-ROM (Missing the cable. I'll need to find one if I ever want to put linux on this thing) :(...

How much can I get for my G5?

That's about in line with average prices, considering I bought a dual 2.7 G5 for $550 on eBay sans video card and HDD. Whoever was saying 1500 was way out. You can get an early Mac Pro for that.

How many have a Powermac G5?

My Dual 2.7 G5 is more than powerful enough for what I do - lots of CAD, some 3d rendering and light photo and SD video editing. So far, I see no reason to upgrade to an intel system, there are no killer apps that are intel only and I have an intel hackbook for the rare occasion I might want to...

Why broken Macs are a better deal

Haha, I never thought new computers would throw me more than older ones. you see, this G5 originally came with an ADC card. And, on the G4s, when you replaced an ADC card with a PC card that had been flashed for Mac, you had to tape two connectors that were off-spec or the system wouldn't...

Why broken Macs are a better deal

Don't worry, first thing i did when I got it was to pull the processor cartridge and look for leaks. And yeah, $570 is a little steep for a gamble, but the individual parts for one of these in "as-is" condition (meaning, yeah it's probably bad but we're not going to say it outright) were...

Why broken Macs are a better deal

I know, I know, this isn't 68k... but I did pick up a working TRS-80 model 4 out of someone's trash the other day, so it all balances out, right? Like most G5s of its era, the bottom handles are bent and the rivets under the door have popped out, but there's nothing a torch and some patience...

Q: what weighs only one pound so you can take it anywhere.

A: The Apple QuickTake 100 - a.k.a. one of the first mass-market digital cameras. 32 pictures at 320x240 or 8 pictures at 640x480 high res  It came in the original box with the manuals, AC adapter, NiCd batteries, and the leather "camera condom" (a.k.a. quick take case) that apple...
