    Powerbook 145b

A big yawn for many, I suspect, because there are faster, bigger PowerBooks out there with better screens, but it was a 100-series PB I wanted and have been looking for. I was given (literally) a PB 170 in 1991 when they had just come out for joining the business school staff, but these seem...

    Classic II with checkerboard screen

I don't have the ability to do a recap myself - I'd be happy to try, but don't have steady enough hands unfortunately to do anything more than a very bodged soldering attempt. I am happy to disassemble the computer to send the boards off for recapping though! It is possible it has battery...

    Classic II with checkerboard screen

It hasn't, and to be honest I doubt it has had any work on it at all, ever. I will likely need some expert help!

    Classic II with checkerboard screen

I have a Classic II which has booted in the recent past, but has sat unused for many months. When I go to boot it up, I get a checkerboard screen (large black and grey squares like a chess board), and then at the next attempt, thick black and grey vertical stripes. I can hear the fan running...

    Buying advice

I don't get to see many vintage Macs up close, other than the few I own, but my 630 is fine. I have seen some with broken or missing rear panels, but aside from carrying the icons identifying ports, these are just cosmetic anyway, and their clips do seem to break off relatively easily. Mine is...

    Buying advice

I generally don't disagree with the experts who regularly post here, but I will disagree with this. Not just because I have a Performa 630 and think that it is great (because it is), but because it is beautifully constructed, built like a tank - except the plastics which are no more, or less...

How does a compact Mac fit into your daily lives?

Yes, it really is. My Classic sat there for a while, but having to use a Floppy Emu to get files on and off it was a bit untidy. The distraction free element of using it was really excellent... and the security of having a system not connected to anything. I really must get the system seen to by...

How does a compact Mac fit into your daily lives?

Sadly, it doesn't. I have a Classic, and a Classic II, and would really like to use them both. The Classic works pretty well, though the floppy doesn't, and the Classic II works when it feels like it, which isn't a lot. I use classic MacOS every day on a combination of systems, including a G4...

PB 1400 hinge issue, and cracking plastic

I agree. Mine isn't too bad, except for the crack in the top above the left-hand hinge, but even though it's the base model, it's a great laptop, and I'd really like to keep it in use. Which of course means I ought to open it up and see what else needs to be done to it in the way of...

PB 1400 hinge issue, and cracking plastic

I was tempted to give the 1400 another chance, not least after realizing that there's a reset button on it that I hadn't pressed. So I plugged it in, and pressed reset. It booted up perfectly. Not sure if it began starting up before I actually pressed reset though, because it boots as soon as...

PB 1400 hinge issue, and cracking plastic

It goes out after a while, or immediately if I remove the battery. The battery doesn't hold a charge that I know of, but I assume it is simply completing a circuit. I did try and boot with the battery removed entirely, because I recall a laptop that failed with similar symptoms that booted...

PB 1400 hinge issue, and cracking plastic

It rewarded my ordering of the 3-in-1 from Amazon by now refusing to boot up. The power light is on, and oddly, glows very dimly if the power adapter is unplugged, though the battery has been dead for years. But black screen, no chime, no internal life such as the drive spinning up. Sadly, it...

USB-ADB Converters. Tinkerboy, Drakware, or Wombat?

I also recommend the Wombat. Not only can it be used either way, but has a soft power switch on it for use when the Mac is compatible, but being used with a USB keyboard which doesn't have it. It can also be bus powered or use a separate power source.

PB 1400 hinge issue, and cracking plastic

That's excellent help, thanks! Yeah, it is very stiff, and it makes sense to keep the level of force used to a minimum. I was sadly a bit careless with it once I'd begun to use it again, not realizing I was causing it damage. Right now it is left open, but that's not tenable in the longer term...

PB 1400 hinge issue, and cracking plastic

I have a PB 1400cs - I'm the original owner so me and it have been through a lot over the years! I recently booted it up, and aside from a screen that takes a while to settle down to usable contrast/brightness, it seems to be working pretty well. However, the plastics on the back of the display...
