Need help with TAM cooling fan!

How and when exactly does the machine crash? I would take things step by step and first check that it is indeed a thermal issue. I'm not convinced that it necessarily is. First of all have you checked and changed the thermal paste on the CPU? I would record the time that it takes to lock up and...

    TAM black screen

The sonnet accelerator is to blame for the longer times. I have one in mine and it does the exact same thing (although not consistently) and when removed it boots considerably faster. Although my sonnet card is unstable in general so that could have something to do with it as well, but then I...

    Is my flyback transformer dead?

That is a good catch with the drive, I didn't notice that. That is a giveaway. I don't know a situation where I'd have a good enough picture with a disk in to see that, but interesting to know all the same. I know the keyboard was available in 86 since that was the 512k e/mac plus, but was it...

    Is my flyback transformer dead?

Also your keyboard is off a plus. The standard 512 didn't come with the numeric keys and I don't know if they even sold the keyboard then as one unit (the num pad was available separately). That was standard with the plus.

    Is my flyback transformer dead?

Is the floppy the 400k or 800k since I know you said this was an upgrade? This is a big difference. I take the 400k drives apart, take the mechanism completely off and then soak it in WD-40. For the 800k drives it becomes quite a bit trickier to get all those pieces off and cleaned. You really...

    CPU upgrades for Cube

Not certain. Do you have any quicksilver machines? I have one laying around I could take a look at it later in the week, but I'm not sure. The bus speed shouldn't be an issue it should just drop down. When I get a chance I'll take a look at it and let you know.

    TAM black screen

While I agree with the heatsink (really on all of these old machines it's a good idea), it wouldn't be likely to be causing a black screen situation (I have never once seen a machine not show the startup screen with a thermal issue. The most important things to look at first are the memory, hdd...

    CPU upgrades for Cube

A dual 500 will likely do worse for the generation of apps you'd be likely to be running. While OS X does scale very well, anything that would take advantage of dual 500s is likely going to be in the class of apps such as photoshop and final cut. For regular use a 1ghz is going to be around...

    TAM black screen

Did you try starting the machine without any HDD connected? If the drive is borderline bad the machine will attempt to read the drive and doesn't start up the screen because it isn't able to read the drive. Make sure the drive is disconnected and then try booting again. This worked for me. With...
