Meme titles aside, I could not be more excited to now own a Performa 575! This happened last week, as a result of an astonishing act of generosity by @JRL (who donated the 'body' of the Performa, which was in good shape but lacking a motherboard), and an excellent transaction with @hyperneogeo (who sold me a recapped Performa 575 motherboard). The fact that either of those things happened at all is pretty remarkable, but the fact that they both happened on the same day and locally (so no shipping was required) is borderline-insane. Our own @maceffects even reached out to me with an offer of a very-reasonably-priced Ethernet card for the Performa and I've already ordered a new SCSI2SD for it from @inertialcomputing, so it should be fully functional within the next week or so. I did perform a quick test (using the SCSI2SD currently attached to the Color Classic II seen above) and the Performa 575 runs like a champ:

They look so funny sitting next to each other like that :-D

Kinda have to agree. The design / style elements clearly share a lot of DNA, but the Color Classic is so elegant and refined, and the Performa 575 looks weirdly... mutated? Like a Color Classic that took a LOT of roids and skipped leg day for years...

Yay, it's looking great!! Happy that it went to a great home

Is that the 575 I traded you several years ago?

If so, I'm glad it found a good home!

I sold that 575 to another MLA member actually! This is another one that I never had the motherboard with. I kept my own LC 575 :)

Ah, OK.  The one I traded you had a rougher looking case, if I remember correctly.

I still have my Performa 578 (my first 68k Mac, actually!  I bought it for $35 at a local thrift store in the summer of 2005)  They're interesting machines, in that they're relatively functional for what they are, but at the same time their looks are a bit weird, somehow managing to be kinda ugly and kinda not at the same time.

And they look even more weird when placed next to something relatively normal looking :)

The eagle-eyed among us may notice that there's a small but meaningful difference between the two pics I posted up above: the Monkey Island pic was taken first (note that the case is pretty dirty, as I hadn't really cleaned it up yet), and the side-by-side pic was taken after I did a quick cleanup job on the 575's case... during which I stupidly(?) removed the front plate (which covers the CD and floppy drives) to get some gunk and dust out, and a small chunk of the left edge of the front fascia literally crumbled to pieces as it popped off. The plastics on this machine are beyond "brittle" and are now better classified as "dried clay." I learned a sad lesson: don't bother trying to deep-clean these machines, just do what you can with a cleaning cloth and let it be.

Wonderful!  I love seeing all the right things come together to make something happen.  I'm glad to be a small part.  I am really fond of the 5x0 series as I used those in school when they were new to write papers and print to ImageWriters.  They are really great, but now temperamental machines.  And sadly the plastics are all brittle.  I'd venture to make new ones but no way I could raise the needed $60,000+.  The value of such machines will continue to rise.

@Trash80toHP_MiniWell, I guess I should clarify that the design language, weird as it may be in general, looks "normal" on the CC, for which it almost seems it is meant*, than the Performa 5xx, which looks to me like an awkward attempt at making a CC with a larger CRT and a CD-ROM drive.

*The SE-derived Classic and LC-derived Classic II have elements of the newer design (Expresso?), but it seems to me like the Performa 5xx and Color Classic were the first pure Expresso designs, with the Performa being a derivative of the Color Classic (EDIT: just checked the Wikipedia article on the Performa 500, and sure enough, it was a derivative design that was rushed into production with little regard to looks).

@Huxley  Only thing that'd make this hilariously complete:  An Apple Djinn.  It'd be the baby in the family.  Not only is baby completely dependent on junior or mama, if baby cries, it'd wake you up at night, too.  *screeeeeee bong bong bong pssshhhhhhhhh screeeeeeeeeeee*

 Print a 50-60% height Portrait Color Classic Pi/DVD with Baby Bear acting as server and WiFi bridge to the modern world for daddy and grandpa bears. Design Language should make a nod forward to the sharper, more defined lines of the 5xxx AIO series.

Please for the love of Finagle, nobody make mention of a tinier great-grandbaby bear with reference to the Molar Mac's Design Language, YUCK! :-p

Hahahaha dammit, now I have a totally-practical reason to justify getting a 3D printer! Look what you've done!!

Wasn't Minitel taken offline only a few years ago?

Has anyone come up with a way of emulating it?

Yes in 2012, but to be honest very few services were still available at that date.

Yes again:

Even using the real thing

https://www.journaldulapin.com/2017/09/24/serveur-minitel/

The Minitel was said to have been an inspiration for the Macintosh (the CRT is the same size, casing has a proper handle and vents are all around)

I have got a Djinn by the way, cute but useless...
