mvallance
Hello. I have a basic question. I wish to connect my PowerBook 1400c / OS8.5 to my Newton 2 via Newton Connection Utilities 2.0. The obstacle is how to de-select my Stylewriter II printer in the Chooser so that I stop getting the message 'serial port in use' when trying to connect the Newton (via a serial cable and Newton adapter). Does that make sense? Thank you.

mvallance
Thank you. I left my Newton in my university office and now they have gone and locked me out for a week I will attempt this again later. I will update this thread.

AppleTalk defaults to using the serial port as its network interface. So if AppleTalk is turned on and you haven't selected the Ethernet port or there is no Ethernet port it will prevent anything else from using it . That's why turning AppleTalk off worked. Cameront9
I'm having a similar issue--using a Powerbook 1400 with OS 8.1, and Newton Connection Kit 2.0 with an original Message pad. I have Appletalk Inactive. However, when I try to sync, it says it can't because the serial port is already in use. I can't figure out what is using the serial port. Any ideas? 68kMLA Supporter rsolberg Posted April 10 68kMLA Supporter Report Share Posted April 10 I couldn't find the cable for my MP2100 to test this, but I was going to try recreating your problem. Once I'd done that, my next step was going to be setting AppleTalk active in Chooser, changing it to the IRTalk (infrared) port in the AppleTalk control panel, then setting AppleTalk to Inactive again in the Chooser. beachycove
This may be irrelevant, but I have a clear recollection that on later systems (certainly 9 but probably later iterations of 8 too) installing Claris Organizer messes with NCU because of an Extension that it adds to the System Folder. This Extension needs removed and then everything works fine. What I can’t remember is whether the problem involves the serial ports....
mvallance
I have a message: Modem/Printer port can't be selected because it is currently being used by another application. I have ensured my Stylewriters are not set up in Chooser, but now I cannot turn on Apple Talk. What application do you think the message is referring? And how to stop it being used? Thanks.
