Howdy, folks! I just finished instAlling PAnther on my TiBook 500 mHz 512 megs RAM system, And everything seems greAt.... except, suddenly, my letter 'A' is deAd unless I press shift! When I just press the 'A' key (without shift), Absolutely nothing hAppens, no mAtter whAt I do. CleArly, the keyboArd is working (the 'A' key worked fine before instAlling PAnther, And the 'A' key works normAlly when I boot into single user mode, And, oddly enough, in the log-in window's pAssword box, pressing the 'A' key without shift still results in A little dot), but I still cAn't get it to give me A lower-cAse 'A'. Also, turning cApslock on doesn't do Anything - I'm only Able to get A letter 'A' by pressing shift And the 'A' key.
I even tried re-instAlling PAnther, but I'm still getting the sAme problem. I Also tried plugging in my old externAl USB keyboArd, which gAve me the exAct sAme result! AAARRGH!
It's now neArly midnight, And I've got A TON of finAls due tomorrow, And now I'm totAlly screwed! I cAnt' work like this! CRAP!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME SOON! I'M PREPARED TO STAY UP ALL NIGHT TO FINISH MY SCHOOLWORK, BUT THIS MAKES IT SO MUCH HARDER...

There are some updates for Panther available....but other than that I say it's another Panther bug rearing it's head. Panther is full of bugs. One reason after I tried it for a bit, I went back to Jaguar since I run a production machine and I'm not paying Apple to be a high priced Beta Tester.

Do you have Default Folder installed?

If so, try upgrading to the current version. I think I read somewhere about a bug in an earlier version causing similar symptoms to this.

Cheers!

What happens if you use a different keyboard? (Have another USB or can borrow one from a friend?)

This is another stretch, but I know that on Mandrake 8.2, if you install the wrong display driver, the keyboard input is ALL messed up.... (wouldn't have thought that OSX could do that, but it's a possibility... I guess....)

sounds like a problem i had with a PC at school today. none of the keys worked except Caps, Num Lock, and Control. control took over the function of Caps Lock though, making it possible to turn that on and off with 2 different keys.. i got a laugh out of that.

anyway, just thought i'd throw that in.. i don't know anything about any version of OSX so i can't help much.

Could it be a font problem? IIRC, some font creators disable a common letter (like lower case "a") in order to prevent illegal use of the font. I wonder if something is screwed up in the permissions for using fonts, etc. Either that or the keyboard layout defualts are hosed.

I hope you solved your problem.

yeah, because in college, it can be an über problem...

(and it is annoying to read all the ays capitalized...)

I wonder what would happen iff'n ye reinstalled jaguar? because it sounds like 'not a hardware problem'.

Howdy, folks!
I just realized that I never let you all know that I got the 'bug' sorted out - turns out it was caused by an out-dated copy of 'Synergy' (a very nifty iTunes controller), and removing the little program fixed it right up.
Just a word to the wise, and thanks for all the help/support!
:-)

LOL, is there a newer version, maybe? (iff'n you wish to keep that program's functionality...) (just a thought)

It's good to know though, that you fixed the problem
