After finding a 605 for BoJ, i thought I should pull out my 605 and give it a boot. Worked fine but was a bit slow with the stock hard drive and processor.

With a bit of hunting in the parts bin, found a full 25 MHz 040 chip and a 700 MB hard drive. Took a bit of time to carefully pry off the old LC040 CPU and then get the replacement CPU's pins to line up carefully. Booted perfectly. The faster hard drive sped up the boot times. Can't really tell if the CPU has doing anything.

Anyone have any suggestions for upgrades?

You won't notice any speed increase unless you're running mathematical type apps. For example, if you're capturing video, doing PhotoShop work, or listening to music in MpegDec, then you will notice a speed increase. If you're not doing any high end kinda stuff, it'll be about as fast as the original LC '040.

Older hard drives run hotter, too. I once put a full height 80 meg IBM drive on (not in, seeing as though i could no longer close my case correctly!) my LCII, and that thing ran quite hot. Thank god i upgraded the cooling in it.

I know that my mobo looked a bit like that...

You could run linux/bsd on it (the quadra)

I forgot to mention that I put a clip-on heat sink. I odn't know where I scavenged that bit from but it is just short enough to clear the lid when it is put on. Just threw an ethernet card in and it sees the network fine.

Are external video cards outrageously expensive for LC slots? I really like dual monitor set ups :)

I'm not sure how much they're worth, but they sure are damn hard to find!
