While installing all my new ram in my Q950 today - maxing it out to 160Mb - I noticed an empty slot between the upper D ram bank and the processor. It looks like it is for a 72-pin chip. What could this be? |

I saw that slot too and thought perhaps it was a VRAM slot. But I could be wrong.Sadly, Apple was never that open with thier designs. (Hence why I don't know what "GIMO" is.)

I might be wrong, but don't Quadras max out at 256mb. . .well, actually I have a 256mb q950. . .so I guess I do know. 16mb simms. thw quad I found already had 8 16mb simms, so I got 8 more! _____________________________________________ I have a problem with vintage electronics. . .I am working on it. Sorry for my sloppy formulation, wisof. What I meant to say is that I filled up all the slots with all the ram I had - 8 x 16 and 8 x 4. I would love to find some more 16Mb chips, but they are usually quite expensive here. Last weekend I saw 4 sold here in Berlin on the e-bay for 70 euros! I got mine for 1!

I just wanted to make sure we all realized the potential to get to 256mb! You are right, 16mb simms are expensive. But I got 8 off ebay for 20-30 USD. . .they can be had!_____________________________________________ I have a problem with vintage electronics. . .I am working on it. Actually, I think there is an unofficial way to get even more RAM in a q950. Look at this beast, sold on ebay for around 200 bucks a couple of months ago. It was pulled fully loaded with 256 MB of RAM from a Quadra 950. http://home.cfl.rr.com/jupiterheights/daystarramcard256.jpgLogan Quadra 950, Workgroup Server 9150, Performa 6400, Powerbook 2300c, 4x Quadra 700's, iBook |

My Q950 already puts my iMac to shame. Bringing the Quadra up to 512 MB would only make the situation worse. Anyone know if the hardware can address those cards directly (ie. would it be useful in A/UX or NetBSD)?

Wouldnt ram running through a nubus slot be alot slower then mainboard ram?I just dont see the point of maxing out a q950 with 256mb when A/UX runs on like 16mb? Its like putting 10gb of ram on a new machine and running linux as a local server. After I get done playing with my apple IIgs (added scsi card, syquest 44, 120mb drive, etc, networked to my q840av for transfering games images over) I resurecting the aws 95.
