i got a q840av about a year ago for free at my local computer recycling center.Well when i got it i realized why it was free. In order to start it up, you have to leave it on for like 10 mins then reapidly press the pwr button on and off until it starts up. well i know this cant be good for the mobo and all, but its the only way to gte it to start up! ive tries replacing the pram battery, ram, and hard drive, and still no luck. can any of u guys help me? |

It sounds like the PSU (Power Supply) is almost dead on it. The fact that it does finally start up indicates the logic board is fine.I can't recall which mac PSU's are comptible with the 840.

Ut oh....bad news for you. Power supplies for these machines are very hard to find. I had one in a PM8100 blow up on me about a year ago, and was without an 8100 until a few months ago when i found another 8100. So see if you can find an 8100 somewhere, and do a switcheroo. Either way, good luck! Btw, i agree with what you said about the 1710AV...i have one on the working 8100 atm and it ROCKS!!!!!"**** em" - Jobs in regards to customers Warrior maclover5 68kMLA Official 68kMLA Detective Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

Check on ebay etc., there might be cheap PSU's on sale, I see them every now and then. PLus the 840Av is a great stock machine for AV capture, general multimedia, plus it's chroma keys make great realtime editing systems for the AV. www.lowendmac.com has the lowdown on the 840 and why it's the greatest 68K around, plus info about the AV circuits. For now, leave it running is ok, although if the PSu is about to die or is bad, I sorta wouldn't wanna chance it for fear when it does go it might take everything else with it.

I agree...the 840AV simply rocks. Btw, if you can find an 8500 or 9500 PSU, that will work too. "**** em" - Jobs in regards to customers Warrior maclover5 68kMLA Official 68kMLA Detective Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |
