Hi. Does anyone know if Insignia's SoftPC 1.0 remains the best/only PC emulator for 68k? Also, did it come with Windows installed or did you have to buy a copy? Any info appreciated.

SoftPC is sort of out of date, mainly because of the fact that it only emulates a 286. Therefore, it cannot run Windows 3.1, or any of the stuff that requires Win 3.1. As for whether Windows 3.0 was bundled or not, i believe that it was not bundled, and that you had to buy a copy. However, emulating a PC on a 68k isn't really the best way to go these days, mainly because you can get a much more capable and faster Pentium 1 out of the trash these days. I believe they made a version of MacBochs (http://bochs.sourceforge.net/) for 68k a couple of years ago, but i can't really remember.

Well, better then getting your self an actuall PC, you might look for a 6100 with a DOS card in it, or just the card if you have a 6100/7100/8100…
Ive seen them on ebay a few times…

If I open my window all the bugs will get in…That's just one more reason to use a Mac!

Good idea. Btw, those 6100 DOS cards will also work in a Quadra, for those who dont' already know. Or you could go the LC 630 DOS compatible route...

SoftWindows 1.02 Shipped with Windows 3.1, and emulated roughly a 286. On a Centris 660AV, it ran quite smoothly. If you want, I have thier product DEMO CD, and you can test drive it if you like.

MacBochs is ok, but it is very old and slow.

SoftPC made several "light" versions of thier products and this enabled you to run Dos & Windows programs, but don't count on anything over Windows 3.1.

If you have a PowerPC, Microcode Solutions makes a really good PC Emulator that shines on my 8600 for running things. It's called PCx. Does a really nice job. So far no luck in getting Windows 95 to work, but the speed is fair enough to make it work.

The Softwindows 68K Demo CD contains the program, and after it's installed it will give you the option of having a Demo or entering a valid serial number. (Serial Number's won't work any longer because they operated with a date system.)

Anyways, it will give you someting to playw ith if you want for 30 days. E-mail me and I'll send it. It's about 7-15MB roughly. (7-8 Disk Images)

SoftWindows 2 was also made. It emulates a 486 and comes with windows 3.11. Runs natively on a PowerPC, but i guess it works on a 68k, though i wouldn't try it.

Maybe there's an uber old (enough) version of VPC that's laying around and'll work on 68k?

Connectix never made a 68K version of the emulator under the name Virtual PC as far as I know, Version 1 was PPC only. They might have toyed with it.

SoftPC, SoftWindows, Bochs, were about the only ones that come to mind. (Oh, and RealPC.)

Connectix did make products for 68K's like MaxRAM and Maxima.

Actually, there was never a version of RealPC for 68k.
