I was searchig around and found out about MacMint, a port of the MiNT system for Atari.http://www.sra.co.jp/people/hoshi/macmint-e.html is where you can find information on it. The info on the Atari version is at http://wombat.doc.ic.ac.uk/foldoc/foldoc.cgi?MiNT I'm not sure what all it can do, but I am going to test it out, since it can run a few UNIX apps. It's amazing what you can find, plus the neat thing is that from what I can tell it requires no FPU, which means plain 6800 Macs could run it. |

I have MacMiNT installed on my Mystic CC and it works great. But uptime isn't installed by default. If anyone knows a place to get a binary for it, I'd be happy to try it out (most of the web info on MacMiNT is in Japanese). I suppose one could try simply copying a binary of uptime from a linux 68k or BSD 68k installation, but I don't have one handy. And I suppose one could try building it from source, but I'm lazy -- and building a binary from source in MacMiNT running on my 68k-based Mac, well that just sounds like a recipe for self-punishment. Finally, are folks here aware of Mac06? It's similar -- a kind of Unix runtime environment very much like MacMiNT. It's made by some German guy (Google should turn it up). I installed it once on a 68k Mac -- it's a bit more complicated than MacMiNT but if memory serves it comes with more commands. This all puts me in mind of a question I've had -- has there ever been any consideration by the mods here of starting a screenshot gallery, either on the web site or via a forum? It would be cool to use Kaleidoscope, MacMiNT and some other utils to make (and post to these forums) a faux-Linux/Unix/NeXTStep environment on my Mystic CC... Yes, I have used Mac 06, and it now has been released as open source, so technically it's free per say and you can get the source for it.Mix Basilisk II Linux, MacMint, Mac 06, System 7.6 and Linux 68K and you could have a killer 68K system with 100% compatibility!

heheheh... now we need to know if BSD runs in emulation If/when I get my IIsi I could probably take screenies (of decent size) with A/UX only have a 640 by 480 monitor I also would happen to wonder... does BSD for the 68k include and/or can it run an X11 graphic environment or whatever? :funs: Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" I have alot of posts... if you don't like it than I don't know what to say. |

NetBSD for 68k does include X11. As of version 1.5.2 (the most recent one I've installed on a 68k Mac myself), the X Server was only 1-bit -- that's black and white. However, I've heard that subsequent releases of NetBSD (v1.6 and on) have an 8 bit (256 colors) X Server instead. I would strongly recommend using a small/low-resource windowing system -- i.e. twm -- as loading up GNOME or KDE will take about 20 minutes, and thereafter using the UI will be dog-slow (I know; I've tried to use them on a Quadra 605 running Debian Linux). Don't know if other BSD variants for 68k (like OpenBSD and FreeBSD) have X11 environements, but my guess would be that they do (and a simple trip to their home pages will give definitive answers). hehehe... most unixy thingies aren't really my bag of tea anyway... A/UX is nice, and OSX is cool... but I'm not really too up for learning to do everything in linux/unix with a command line.... too lazy and not patient enough...Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide Editor of the MLAgazine "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life" |

If I had more time I would dive into programming in UNIX and just spit out the best code for 68k's.But I have no time.
