Hello,

I have a performa 630CD w/ a 68040 running os7.5.5. After running fine for a few days, suddenly the system freezes on startup. I start w/o extensions to try and resolve the problem. . .well, I am a newbie to macs. . .no extensions = no cd original system software. . .so I take out all of the extensions figuring I could start by adding one by one to see which extension was giving me trouble. Now the system wont get past this screen that says:

:The "system" on this startup disk may be damaged. The installer can be used to repair this disk.:

I cannot boot off of anything, the computer just reverts back to this screen on every startup. Any help would be appreciated. . .totally new to mac systems

I have a problem with vintage electronics. . .I am working on it.

Have you tried to start up from a floppy disk yet?

Unfortunately I only have the CD with os 7.5. And no ability to switch the startup disk. . .do I just need to toss in a new hard drive?

If you have a CD with 7.5, you should be able to start-up from it by inserting the CD and restarting whilst holding down the "C" key.

Condolences. But as long as you can keep Intel Outside, you should be fine.

I tried to boot up with the system 7.5 disk whilst holding down "c" and I get the same message!

>The "System" file on this startup disk may be damaged. The installer can be used to repair this disk.<

There has to be a way to start over! My mac can't just be screwed because the software is! Is there a way I can just somehow wipe the hard drive and reinitialize the system? Help!

When I start up there is a smiling Mac as there always is. . .then it goes to "Welcome to Macintosh" (without the computer graphic to the left) and then the error message. This sucks. . .

Try holding down Command-Option-P-R (the "Command" key is the Apple key or the one that looks like a little fan blade and is near the space bar). This resets the PRAM which contains a little bit of software and some settings that might be the source of all the troubles.

tried to reset the PRAM as you said. I restart and hear the mac startup sound. . .then I press command+option+P+R and I get the startup chime for a second time. . .
then the smiling mac. . .
then the same error. . .

this happened to me once about two weeks ago, but miraculously I restarted to not get the error. now it will not go past it. . .no booting w/o extensions, no booting off the cd, no booting. . .and why does the mac icon keep smiling at me!?!?!?

It's smiling because the hardware is all okay, it's just the software that's messed up. Try booting from the Network Access Disk floppy and see if you get the same error.

Network Access Disk?

Unfortunately I do not have this disk.

I did recently purchase a full copy of os 7.6 (in order to get to os7.6.1). This comes with CDs and floppies. Perhaps I can boot off of those floppies, but as of now, I have no floppies from which to boot off of. Unfortunately it is coming from the UK and I will have to wait at least 2 weeks for it to arrive.

arrrrrrrrg. . .

I do have access to other macs. . .is there a way to make a boot floppy disk from files found on the internet? The mac is running os8.6 (I believe). Can I download that Network access disk to a floppy and do it that way?

I have a problem with vintage electronics. . .I am working on it.

Download the Network Access Disk here:

http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/Network_Access_Disk_7.5.sea.bin

Write it to a floppy using DiskCopy on another Mac. If you want you can make one on a PC with a nifty self-writing image made by The Balance of Judgement. Then stick the floppy in your Mac and hold the "D" key as it starts up.

You can download BoJ's disk thingies here:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/citonx600/Network_Access_SMI.exe?download

Just pop in a blank floppy, double click on the .exe file when it's downloaded, and wait for it to write the disk. ONce it's done you should have a bootable floppy disk for your Mac.
