this question came up a while back over at the fritter ... so i thought i should let everyone know over here too ...that question was whether a LC could hold 2 hard disks ... and im quite pleased to say that it does .... the second hard disk fits PERFECTLY into the space for thew floppy drive ... and with a custom SCSI cable and a Y-adaptor power cable it works of the internal PSU too

pics of my LC III -

http://users.macunlimited.net/toml/stuff/lc3_inside.jpg (56k)

the only problem is that LC 475s and some (later) IIIs have 30watt PSUs which cant cut 2 HDs ... the 55watt ones from earlier LCs are alot better

yeah... I forgot what wattage the IIsi PSU is... but I'm not surprised that an LCIII can do that... (the fitting, and the PSU also...)

cool though!

now youneed to make a new "top hat" for it without the floppy-hole

Very nice. Now the question is with a stock LC III what are the largest scsi drives that the power supply can handle?

Smaller than an LC III???? I'll be waiting to see the pics.

Heh, i knew it would fit, i just wasn't sure if the PSU had the guts to power it! Either way, cool!

Quick idea about the floppy hole: Try finding a spare LC case and get the plastic block from the second floppy drive location. You probably can pop it into the LC III's floppy hole.

It will fit upside down...I've seen it being done before.

exept my LC III has the 475 style lid ... so the LC II floppy covering wont work .... as for the smaller foot print ... i may make it more of a cuboid shape ... so its shallower and heigher ... ot a tower case might work

Ah, nice. Glad to hear about someone else who has an LC475 style LCIII. Mine's the only one that I've seen with that case, and I know its the original case, because we got it brand new back in 1993.

yeah ... i womdered about that case for a while too ... as all the LC IIIs in my school had LC II style cases ... but i guess near the end of production they just stuck them in the 475 cases for cost reasons

Yeah. Btw, do you have an LCIII+ or a regular LCIII? Because from what i've heard, most of the LCIIIs with the newer style cases are actually LCIII+'s. To check whether you have one, check the CPU speed.

Very inspiring hack --my old LCIII is very exited by the possibility of a second HD.

BTW, if you set the delay motor start jumper on the second HD, you might be able to get dual HDs working on Mac with an inadequate PSU. HDs draw max power during spin-up (most will suck down around 1 Amp on the 12V line when the platters are coming up to speed). So, if you stagger the spin-ups, then the drain is reduced. Many HDs have a jumper that delays the start-up by 4 to 10 seconds (some even delay by an amount proportional to the SCSI addy so you can stagger startups on a bunch of drives). Consult your drive's manual for the location and behavior of this jumper.

good idea :)

Maybe you could get more than 3 drives on a IIsi that way also?

Its one of those little hard (non-floppy?!) 3.5" square flat plastic thingies that AOL used to send out before they discovered that CDs were more effective way to cover the Earth.

I'm not sure if a floppy can be shared on the network

I tried this once. File sharing was not available for an internal floppy drive. Perhaps I did not have thing configured correctly. Hmmm.... I wonder if my external SCSI-based floptical can share floppies on the network?

BTW, why not make a long version of the ribbon cable that goes to the internal floppy, run the cable to outside the Mac, and plug in a naked floppy drive for those rare occassions when a floppy is needed?

i tried this before ... i think there was too much emi for the cable ... all the data being transfered from floppy -> computer and back was being corrupted ... though it works fine with the longer cable inside the case (in its slot) ... maybe a shielded cable would work ... but alas ... i cant be bothered to make one
