1. Yes, you're right. The Performa 580 has an IDE hard drive and a SCSI CD-ROM drive.

2. As for putting a CD-RW on the IDE bus, you probably can, but it will need to hang out the back of the machine and look ugly, as there is no room in the hard drive bay for a 5.25" device.

Hope this helps

Just make sure you use either:

a) The version of the Apple CD ROM drivers that came with System 7.6

OR

b) A 3rd party driver. Otherwise it's not gonna work.

Nah, Asus doesn't make CD-ROM drivers for the Mac. As for the version of the Apple CD-ROM drivers i was talking about, there is a version of the AppleCD ROM drivers that came with System 7.6 or 7.5.x, which SHOULD work with your drive....IIRC a lot of Maclones, which had third party drives, worked fine with that version.

Hope this helps!

I'm not sure really. However, I do know that Plextor makes good drives. However, before making a decision you'd want to see if the drive you want is supported by Toast.

Cant' see why it wouldn't fit. However, if you do that, you won't be able to put in a video card. You can upgrade the processor via a PowerPC based 603 Performa mobo, which will allow you to retain your PAS-16, and if you want ethernet, that goes into the brown slot next to the LC PDS slot, which is the Comm Slot.

Hope this helps.

Well, on the G3/G4 side of things, there is the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live (like the one you've probably seen on many PeeCees), which is excellent for normal consumer use, like games and stuff. However, for higher end users, i believe Digidesign makes them...you might wanna have a look around on their site....i really know next to nothing about top of the line audio stuff.

Edit - as for that comment about having more people visit, well, not as many people visit the MLA as they used to, mainly because of the fact that the 68kmla.com domain, which was what they probably remembered, is now permantly borked.

When I find time, I'll try and come up with some ideas for you... I have one that would allow you to keep everything in the case, but I don't have time to elaborate right now...

Please clear this up for me, are we talking about running a CD/RW in a 68k Mac here?? Does a 68040 have enough power to do that??

Couldn't see why not. My LC630 can burn a CD-R at 6x fine, and if you look in an old issue of MacAddict, you'll find a review for a DVD-RAM drive that requires a 50 Mhz '030 as a minimum to use the program that comes with it! iThink its the July 2000 issue.

Put your Performa on its side. See that little slot at the botton of the front there? Well, GENTLY put a screwdriver up it, a flat bladed one, enough to unclick a connector. If my memory serves me right, you'll hear a click. Once that's done, you can lower the drive cover a bit, and then pull it off.

P.S. A few times i've done this, i've broken the little clip on the cover off. However, this doesn't matter, as when everything's back together, I find that it holds itself on well enough.

i got it with the 580. well, i'm planning to get broadband

a) I'm at uni, so i'm currently using the Dell..nice for a PC, but its not a Mac.
b) Nope, its not getting sold, I'm sorry
c) I have absolutely $0 at the moment.
d) I only have the Video System, which has S-Video/Composite Video/stereo audio in. This allows you to hook up a VCR, camcorder or game console. Its the TV/Video Ssytem that allows you to watch TV without a VCR, which i don't have. As for the ethernet card, its probably worth about AU$20 (US$10).

Sorry i can't help you, but this is a great Mac, and i wanna hang onto it for quite a while...

a) Why should I make a new thread? This one is good enough.
b) We're not looking for any more mods at the moment. Sorry!
c) You need to be a moderator in order to get the pw
d) As for where to get the TV/Video system, maybe you could try some friends of yours who use Macs, or you could try an Apple retailer that has been around for a while (1997 at the latest), or you could go onto eBay.

TV/Video system.
let me see.. ebay ? no chance of getting it.
i might but it's hard to deal with
read = malaysia.

local mac distributor, i'll ask my way out.
hopefully some of them still have the system
but i guess it's gonna be super expensive.
well, i need to get a job.
i'm trying to persuade my father to buy me an emac.
is it a good mac ? it's the cheapest...

If the TV system is any more than AU$30 (US$15), i'd say forget it. As for the eMac, yeah, it is a great machine. People badmouth it by saying its ugly and slow, but it actually is a very nice machine. Either way, i hope you get it!

Oh shit.

I just remembered....

There's no TV slot on the 580, only a Video slot. And yes, I have looked inside a 580 myself, IRL. There is no TV slot in it. That means that if you want to watch TV, you must plug in a VCR to the Video System and watch TV.

Sorry.....

well, if it all works out as i plan it,
i'm gonna give the performa to my lil brother.
i want him to learn more stuff about computers
and appreciatte apple computers.

just like i used to be...

maybe he'll grow up and be an apple genius.
i hope he did. but let he choose what he wants to be.

as for me, i'm gonna get either a standard power mac, upgraded to G3/G4,
Or a powerbook G3 (lombard) 333 Mhz
Or an eMac.

i'm too depressed now because i know my change of getting it is 5%.
but sometimes i visualize things, you know.
dreams for those who can afford it.

i visualize me and my G4.
doing audio stuff on it
(protools/peak LE/digital performer)

i hope god still loves me.
and my father too.

oh dear apple computers ?
why are thy so tempting ?
why are thy so expensive ?

I tried installing a IDE CDRW drive in my 6360 with an external SCSI HD, but it would lock up. Also IIRC none of the beige macs supported a master with a slave device.
