Well, with that sort of configuration, you will be able to play any of those games that aren't PPC only, and if you want to run PPC stuff, you can get a mobo from a PowerPC Performa and it will just slide in and work. The hard drive is a standard IDE drive and can be upgraded with any IDE drive you can get your hands on, available at any PC shop. Also, a neat thing you can do with these machines is install the Apple Video system, hook up a VCR, and watch TV on it. It looks damn good, too. However, don't go for the TV/Video System. The Video system will work fine, but the TV tuner won't fit. Also, the CD ROM is a SCSI unit, and can be replaced with any other Apple SCSI drives.

Have fun!

Yeah, you can watch TV if you put in the Video System and plug in a VCR to the Composite or S-Video in ports. As for the VRAM, well, unless you install an LC PDS expansion card and plug in an external display, you're limited to 640x480 @ 16 bit (Thousands) colour.

Well, you'll need to take the drive cover off, and install the CD drive in the empty bay that you will see. You'll also need to replace the bezel you removed with one that has a slot for CDs, unless you don't mind the Mac looking ugly.

No, you don't have to hack it. The procedure I mentioned is an Apple approved upgrade for your Performa. If you can't find a Performa 580 one, grab one from another machine in the 5xx series, like a 550 or 575, its the same part, just with a different name.

You CAN install OS 8.1, as it was an update to 8.0. However, without installing a PowerPC logic board, thats as far as you can go. Apple's web site should have the System 7.6.1 update, although you'll need to have 7.6.0 installed for it to work.

This debate has raged for as long as computers have been around. Based on the failure characteristics of harddisks, a single on/off cycle is the equivalent of about 3 to 6 hours of on-time. I'm not sure about other devices (like CRTs, semiconductors, and capacitors) but I suspect they have a similar trade-off -- each on/off thermal cycle eats up a few hours of lifespan.

Personally, I shut down my computers if they are not going to be used for more than a few hours. I also suspect that the occasional reboot helps keep things running smoothly.

Just my 2 cents or 2 sen.

BTW, Malaysia is a great country with wonderful food!

Personally, I like to leave my comps on, as starting up the computer can put it through a fair bit of stress depending on the quality/age of the parts. Turn on your stereo now. Hear that *POP* that you get when you turn it on? That's the little bit of a surge that's coming in, as the components arent expecting to get juice going through them any time soon. Anyway, i hope this makes sense.

Typically, I leave my machine(s) on as long as I am doing something with them, If I doing somethin else and come back to them I'll leave them on. However, if I leave the house, I turn off the power. I agree, that multiple on/off cycles probably do shorten the life of a computer, I have to think in terms on economics as well, I gotta pay the power bill too...

is screensaver any good ?
i got macdim..

i hope it doesn't blur my monitor or anything.

you know the term "don't fix what's not broken"
well my monitor is still good.
and if it ruined, there's no way to replace it..

p/s: apple stuff really are quality stuff..
my 580 is superfine. and i bet there's some LISA running fine...
hail APPLE MACINTOSH

Nope, a screen saver won't do anything bad to your monitor. It simply consists of a little moving picture that runs fullscreen. Nothing bad. I'm not sure if the Performa's monitor needs a screensaver, but it's always better to be safe than sorry.

ok. i think i'm gonna keep it on.
but sometimes it just kill me because when you're running
something important like installer etc, the screen saver would come in an ruin it. and i set my 580 to sleep after 30 minutes of no activity. i hope it's right.

that's the best thing to do.
or you can restart with extensions off.

hmm, speaking of extensions.. where can i get conflict catcher ?
C&G ? i got this conflict (i think) sometimes when i want to open some folder... it just hide the finder, open the window, close the window, show finder, infinite loop.

do you know what's the problem ?
i guess it must be because i installed addons too much.

Yeah, you can hold down the Shift key and start with extensions off. However, if you're installing off a CD, you'll want to have a Mac OS startup CD in your drive, so that it can load the driver.

it sounds like you are having a great time with your mac!

you would be ther PERFECT person for maclover's article in the upcoming MLAgazine (eMail me if you have anything to contribute )

anyway... yeah the 580s are a great mac hine...

how'd yo get 40MB of RAm in yours?

(I had a 578 once, and was dissapointed when I found out I couldn't do the TV thing on mine :'( I have a 6500 now though!)

old versions of conflict catcher are probably on the MLA HL servers (HotLine) if you can access them.

MLAzine ? Article ?
what article ?

about the great times, i got over 500MB of 68k games.
and 500 MB is *stuffed* games
(haven't expanded yet)
just don't have the time to upload it..
i'm living 1 game a day =P

i'm sorry the 40 MB was a typo.
i thought it was 8 MB onboard,
but it's only 4MB.
so i got 36MB, but still haven't use it fully...

later
pojam.
