Hi,

Can I run a 475 from a power supply from an LC? It´s slightly weaker, but perhaps the 475-powersupply has more amps than needed?

Should be no problem. According to http://applehistory.acmug.com/support_files/by_processor.html the PSU on the 475 was actually weaker (30 W) than that of the LC and LC II (50 W). Are they in error? Does anyone know if the 475 really uses a more powerful PSU?

Leave it to Apple to spend the money to redesign a custom PSU to output less power just to make sure a machine isn't really upgradeable. Bank on it.

It'll work fine. Trust me. The amps are exactly the same. It's just the watts that are different, and it probably won't draw that many watts unless you have a big HD, so feel free to plug it in.

yeah.... it'll work... usually a PSU draws the watts lower than it's rated for....

well, in fact, both the amps and watts are higher. The effect can never be higher if the power is not as well, as the volts are always the same. But anyway, it worked. Now onto my next task; the 3HD+CD scsi-box

My "LC thing" (I'm not quite sure what model to call it anymore) is a 475 motherboard with the case and power supply of an LC II, and it works fine. It's even running two drives instead of one and overclocked, and I haven't had any problems.

Ayup, they're multiples, so if the output voltage is held constant (as it must be to be compatible) the increased wattage would indicate the increase in output capability of the older PSU (measured in amperage) over the later revisions.

The 475/605 needed less power due to increased efficiency of its components like the FDD and HDD, higher density memory and more tightly integrated electronics in its more advanced ASICs. Apple needed to reduce the output of the PSU so developers couldn't utilize the excess power by building a more capable upgrade card/accelerator for the microquadras . . . they might take sales away from the high end systems.

ohwell... we love our feetsmacs and microQlusters and brickoven macs

If I had a choice between a 605 that was basically the guts of an 840av... and an 840av.... I'd take the 605

Quadra 605av ?
