Low end mac and other sites mention in their spec sheet of the Performa 475 that there are 2 VRAM slots. The machine I found in the trash (which was smoked in a fire, but has since aired out) chimes up properly when booted, but the monitor didn't kick in. When I opened up the case, I immediately noticed that there was no VRAM chip AND that there is only 1 slot. Is this the right board and did someone just change the case? There are 2 8Mb 72-pin SIMMS installed and that is it.
Any ideas on why there is a discrepency?

LC475/Performa 475/Quadra 605 have:

2 slots VRAM. 2x256kb or 2x512kb
The 1 slot is RAM - 72pin SIMM

Your empty slot is the RAM slot. The 2x8mb SIMMs are either 256kb or 512kb VRAM simms.

Thanks! That explains a lot. Anyway, I just got it working. I had to flip on the power switch a few times and it finally booted, showing the monitor. Probably a pram problem. So I guess I am working on the 4 MB motherboard RAM and can fit in a 32 MB stick, if I could find one. Well this is great news. How can I determine how much VRAM is installed?

Yes, the booting problem is a flat PRAM battery.

To determine VRAM, see:

I get 32,768 colors at 512x383, so I guess that clears up that question. Thanks!
